This is a question about what to bring to the hospital for after labor! One of the suggestions to pack is a nursing bra, but I'm curious if a nursing tank (with built in bra shelf) would be sufficient. I have no idea what size I'll need after birth (I've heard the girls can get pretty big), so I'm wondering if a nursing tank would do the trick, or if I need something with more support. What do you ladies say?

I had a nursing tank, and it was fine. My boobs didn't get huge, though (and weren't big to begin with), even after my milk came in (they just got fuller). I didn't need much support.

Nursing tank. My nurses got annoyed at me if I had anything on that was restrictive. The nursing tanks fold down with no problem and are much easier to deal with than bras. That being said, if you want to do skin to skin a lot, just take everything off.
My Mom bought me some size large tanks from Target and they were fine. They fit me 1 day pp and still fit me today (45lbs lighter and with my D cups). I had B cups still when I gave birth.

I prefer tanks now. However it ended up being moot for me at the hospital as my nipples were so.sore those first few days it is more important to have relief for them. Earth mama angel baby nipple butter was my lifesaver. I couldnt even wear my nursing tank or bra at the hospital. It felt better without anything.

I didnt use either. I just wore the hospital gown, it has snaps over the shoulder for easy breast feeding

I wore a Coobie bra (and a dress) pp. I am sure you will be fine with a tank.

I almost never use nursing bras. Tanks all the way, baby!

I wore a nursing bra while I was in labor (had a gown on but it ended up bunched up around my neck, so it made more sense to just take it off) and nursing tanks for PP.

With my first I didn't wear a bra until we were being disharged at which time I wore a nursing bra in a size bigger than my regular; I was find since my milk didn't come in until after we were home. With my second I wore a nursing tank because I slept in it.

I would go with nursing tanks if you already have them. However, I didn't actually use either at the hospital. I just wore the gown that they gave me, which had nice easy-access panels.

I didn't wear either while in the hospital. I just wore the gown. But I would go with a tank. Your milk probably won't come in while you're in the hospital so your breasts won't be any bigger yet.

I wore a nursing tank so I could have a little support since I am naturally large chested. Next time I might go with a sleep nursing bra, I have one now and it is so comfortable and not restrictive at all.

I am going against the grain here. My nipples were so sore I really prefered to have on my nursing bra under the hospital gown. It had a little padding to it so it protected my nipples from anything rubbing against them.

I totally wore nursing tanks underneath a zip up hoodie or button up pajama top.

I had nursing pads to protect from chafing as well (and lanolin). I wore the tank and my giant underwear and the gown as a robe - I was usually sitting down with a blanket over me so it was easiest.

I wore sleep nursing bras under the hospital gown. My milk didn't come in until after we left the hospital.

Thank you ladies!!! This thread has been soooo helpful! I just bought a few nursing tanks last night (Motherhood was having a buy 3, get 1 free sale) and I was hoping I'd be able to get away with just bringing them with me to the hospital (either to wear there, or wear when I'm discharged). So glad I don't need to figure out this nursing bra business quite yet!

You could always do a sleep bra...I got one at Target that is sized like s-m-l and I figure it'll fit in the awkward in-between time. I plan to pick up a couple of tanks as well.

Definitely a nursing tank! After the first night I was able to get out of the crappy hospital gown and just wore a nursing tank and comfy sweatpants.

My nips were way too store for anything so I just wore the gown and often when the nurses weren't in the room I kept the gown down around my stomach so I was topless. Most comfortable for me! Once I got home I used nursing tanks.

I did sleep bras too. I still love them almost 7 months postpartum. So comfy and easy to push to the side. I don't care for unhooking stuff with one hand.
My milk didn't come in until after I left the hospital either.

@Adira: I need to get these still. My SIL got me a gift card for Christmas but it wasn't here in time for Christmas. She told me that she was supposed to get it Wed, so I am still waiting. But I wanted to use it for tanks. I will be mad if I miss the sale!

@Smurfette: Yeah, I have no idea how long the sale is going to last, but hopefully your gift card comes in time!! The tanks aren't cheap (~$21), but the sale makes them more like ~$16, which doesn't seem as bad to me!
