Do you ask potential babysitters their desired wage or do you tell them how much you are willing to pay?
This is for a childcare for a date night for a dinner and movie...so maybe 4ish hours.

I would offer a rate and open to negotiate? I would start at $10/hr if it's a experience babysitter?

I would offer 10 bucks an hour and go from there if they have their own transportation.

Would you pay more if it was a teacher from daycare?

I always ask first and after they tell me their wage, I either accept or let them know my rate.
I had a 13 year old babysit once and was fully prepared to give her $7-$8/hr and when I asked her rate she said $5!

@autumnlove: absolutely!!! Because she obviously has experience and is familiar with LO. But in that scenario I would let her start.

@regberadaisy: ok! Oh, crap what about for 2 kids? I'm obviously new to this!

@autumnlove: ooh I would probably offer more since #2 is a baby!

i asked people their rates and tried to negotiate since everyone in my area was more than i wanted to pay. They said they normally get $15/hour. I managed to get one girl for $14 and the other for $13. They are both college educated. The $14 one also works as a nanny, I just hired her part time for the summer before she starts her next full time position.
