We used Care.com to find a local baby-sitter since we didn't have a referral through friends. I was looking for a college student who had a lot of experience with younger infants since my LO is 5 months old. It's a huge difference when someone says they've babysat a one year old compared to a baby who is just meeting milestones like lifting their head and sitting up on their own.

We met with one student at Panera and really liked her right off the bat - she had the experience, was CPR/First Aid certified, very pleasant to talk with and the vibe just felt right. We were really lucky to find her and it was worth paying $35 for a month of Care.com services. She's come over to our house a few times since first meeting her.

I think the most important thing is to ask for references from previous families the sitter has worked with.
