My DS is starting K in the fall and I’m looking for recommendations on your favorite backpacks and lunch bags. His daycare always provided meals so I’m new to the lunch bag. I want to get a durable backpack (maybe LLBean?).
TIA

We got the large Mackenzie backpack from pbk (wait for a sale/coupon if you order from them!) - somewhat just for the pretty patterns - and it’s held up well this year. It’s pretty big so I think it will definitely last a couple more years (and she’s tall).
For lunch we got the packit freezable bag off amazon because I hate hearing about lunch being too warm - it makes it super easy! It fits the yumbox we use, a fork and after-school snacks but I put her water thermos in the side pocket of her backpack.

I got the SMALL PBK McKenzie backpack. DD is petite and she wore it for kindergarten and 1st grade ....and wants to use it for 2nd. I measured for folder size and if it fits LO well height wise. I chose a dark color, adjustable for size, chest strap and the quality is made to last. The only reason I'm considering changing it is if LO outgrows it, school requires carrying more and the pink trim is a little bit stained. I got her the matching Retro lunchbag. I like that I can put the drink/apple on top side without smashing everything else. It can clip to the outside but DD carries it otherwise the backpack is uncomfortably weighted. They are having a sale right now. 30-50% off

*Man, I should have went into marketing. Lol.

I bought something from amazon, my son wanted a specific solid color with the school logo on it, so I found something okay and seerd on a logo patch. My son will be in second grade next year and he probably has another year left in it and it’s not babyish.

@looch: I like that idea to sew on a patch to personalize it!
If I was a kid, I would want this one!! I wish DD chose it!

@808love: I thought it was a good solution for a rather unusual request. It was a good reminder in the sense that I made it about him, not what I wanted.
I have a lot of ideas about coordination and generic things, but my son tends to like characters so when he picked this, I was happy.

@looch: Right! Anything but the characters. That reminds me, DD has that Skye Paw Patrol backpack she uses every time we go traveling and for a few weeks in kinder. I don't recommend that one! Purely a cheap pleasure choice.

We have been very happy with the Embark satchel lunch bag from Target. It fits our Yumbox great and we stick his Foogo of milk or Contigo water bottle on the sleeve outside. It’s $12.99 and he’s now going on 2 years of using it every single day for lunch.
We have the PBK full size backpack for DS2’s daycare bag and its a great bag, but I think would be too big for kinder. I’d probably get the smaller one. I think a chest clip is very helpful to keep it on their shoulders.

I don’t have a backpack recommendation, but I strongly recommend a washable lunch bag. We ended up switching mid year, because she had some awful spills in her lunch bag that couldn’t be wiped clean. I love the neoprene bags that go in the washer.

@Alba4: Just be sure if you buy from PBK that you DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT buy the "PreK" size. Pretty much any school will require that your child's bag hold a standard size folder (for communication), and this bag does not. The Skip Hop Zoo bags that are really popular with the preschool set also do NOT hold a folder.

DD used the SMALL PBK backpack for K and now 1st grade -its held up very well!
We have a pack-it (the freezer one) for days she eats cold food and then a neoprene bag for days she wants a thermos with pasta and chicken.

We use the small Pottery Barn and coordinating lunch kit. Very sturdy and we will be able to use them again next year. I like that the lunch kit can be attached to the outside of the backpack as well.

I'm eyeing the LLBean Original Book Pack for my kid this year. It's light, durable and classic - it can be worn for many years - no prints that suddenly are too babyish.

@Alba4: another vote for pbk. We got the small with matching lunch bag (I forget the style but I can look it up for you) plus water bottle and it has been super durable. I heard from friends with older kids that you can count on them to last a few years. My hope is to use this one for 3 years and then get the large for 3rd grade. They don’t actually carry that much stuff around—communication folder, backup clothes, work that gets sent home, lunch and water.

I ended up getting PBK Batman, but the larger size offered. He’s pretty tall and He is going to use it for summer camp before K, so he’ll need the space for his towel, swimsuit, and lunch. Thanks for your expertise!

@PinkElephant: Thanks. We have those cute skiphop backpacks, but they are too small for daycare (I can’t fit in bedding). My boys still play with them though and use them for day trips to take toys in the car.

Lands End backpack and Lands End lunchbag. They're practically indestructible and the backpack will last through 2nd grade at least (fingers crossed). The next size up was too big for a little kid.
I tried out the PBK backpack and hated it.
