If you breastfed or pumped during the newborn months, what was your approach to middle of the night feeds? Did you exclusively BF or was someone else able to give LO a bottle of pumped milk/formula? If you gave a bottle, did you still pump during that time to maintain your supply?

I EPed.... Pumped once in the MOTN, usually dh would feed dd while I pumped, or I would pump after I fed her. She started STTN fairly early...once she did, there was no way I was waking up to pump! My supply adjusted quickly.

I just breastfed. It was quickest and easiest. Once my supply was established, I'd sometimes pump before I went to sleep and DH would do the first night waking, but usually if DD cried I was awake anyway so it didn't make that much of a difference.

LO usually only eats from one side during the MOTN so I always pump the other side.

I waited until 3 weeks to pump/give a bottle. At first I would nurse him at 9, wait an hour, pump at 10, and let DH give a bottle around 11:30. That would allow me to sleep from 10ish until he was up again around 2. After a few weeks doing that I felt supply was firmly established and by the time he was 5-6 weeks I would pump once in the morning and once at night and let DH take an overnight feeding. I never really had issues with supply and my body just adjusted to the output times.

I had extremely low supply, so we always did bottles in the middle of the night to ensure she was getting enough. My husband would feed her, and I'd sit in bed and pump. By the time we were both done, we'd snuggle back to sleep until the next wakeup.
If I had a full supply, I would have BF, and if we did give a bottle, I would have gotten up to pump.
Our daughter started sleeping through the night around 8 weeks (it's VERY relative), but I decided at that point to rest when she rested. If I happened to wake up, I'd go pump, but otherwise, I let myself rest.

When I pumped, I would feed E a bottle and pump. I lost an insane amount of sleep this way-I was up an extra 30 min each damn time!. I won't do it again

I breastfed all MOTN feedings. I figured there was no point having both me and DH up for a MOTN feeding. If I tried to skip a feeding, I'd have to get up and replace that feeding by pumping anyway! Plus I wouldn't be able to keep sleeping anyway bc I'd be really engorged!

I just bf. I hate pumping, especially in the middle of the night.

I EP'd. At the beginning, when I was establishing my supply, I would pump with each bottle during the MOTN. Occasionally, on the weekend, my DH would give a bottle in the MOTN and I wouldn't wake up to pump. That was glorious. When I finally did stop waking entirely to pump, my supply was impacted. So eventually I did supplement with formula.

From what I remember I would bf LO right before bed and then pump right after the feeding and would BF for MOTN wakings. For the first few weeks LO was EBF, after about a month or so we introduced a bottle and DH was able to feed LO while I pumped in the MOTN. It was rough, but I was on maternity leave and once LO started sleeping in longer stretches I would just pump right after feeding him to sleep and in the morning when I woke-up.

I always bf in the MOTN it was quicker and easier than pumping

I BF'ed in the MOTN. Once DS started STTN I still got up and pumped so I could maintain my supply once I went back to work.

I nursed, it was way easier than pumping. She didn't STTN until 10 months and by then I didn't feel the need to pump to keep up supply in the MOTN.

I breastfed in the night. It was much faster to get him and whip a boob out. Then he didn't get too riled up and went back to sleep right away. Less painful for everyone.

I had such supply issues I BFed and then pumped. It was awful.

Once he was about 8 weeks, I would pump before I went to bed and DH would feed him for his first middle of the night wake-up (if it was before 3 a.m.). Any other MOTN feeds I breast-fed. I had good supply and was easily able to pump a 4-5 oz. bottle every night and that was what DH would feed him. Sometimes he wouldn't wake-up until after 3 and I would just freeze the milk that I had in the fridge. Didn't affect my supply at all

No one has ever given my LO a bottle in MOTN. It seemed like way more work and technically yes you need to pump at that time anyways to keep up supply if it will be a regular occurrence. Also you will prob be engorged and uncomfortable anyways.

@Freckles: I breast-fed and pumped for the first 4 months then EBF after that. However, in the middle of the night I still got up to BF...DH didn't bottle feed at all.

Thanks, ladies! With number one I pumped while DH gave her a bottle and it did nothing for us. Just thought I'd see if anyone successfully gave their SO MOTN feeding responsibilities while BFing!

Like others I BF during MOTN feedings. DH got up, changed her diaper and then gave her to me. We were each involved but got the most sleep this way.
