DD2 has started biting while nursing and it hurts!!! 
I immediately pull off and give her a stern no. She just looks at me and smiles then laughs. Doesn't help that it's so cute when she does the latter that I smile.
DD1 only bit me very briefly and flicking her cheeks usually worked. Got any other tips for me? DD2 has been biting me for over a week and it's incredibly frustrating!

How old? LO doesn't have teeth yet but man she has a gummy bite that makes me cry out, I pull of immediately and say OUCH that hurts mommy but at not even 3 months she has no clue! ha

We've been dealing with it for a while now. He seems to do it when he's done drinking. Nothing I've tried helps! So I now only nurse before and after sleep, so he's too tired to bite.

@Mrs.Someone: haha yes, it's typically during the day when she bites. But you have a good point; maybe I should stop nursing when she starts biting. Clearly she's not hungry if she's biting!
@LuLu Mom: almost 10 months and her first toofer just popped through! It was painful too when I could feel it under the gums. Owie

Ugh, my DD got her first two teeth at 4 months--and at first, she just had to get used to nursing with them. But yesterday, for the first time, she bit me and then GRINNED at me. Little stinker! (She's 5.5 months.) I said "OW!" really loudly (don't judge me--that's how we taught our dogs not to bite, haha!) and then stopped feeding her. No idea if it'll help.

@regberadaisy: Well definitely don't smile at her after she bit you!
With Xander, I'd pull him off and say "no!" (usually after saying "oww!") And if he did it again, the nursing session was over. Usually he bit when he was done nursing anyway, so if I was paying attention, I could unlatch him before it happened.

I would end the nursing session altogether if simply pulling her off and saying no isn't working. flicking her cheek?! Seriously?! That just seems wrong.

@catomd00: I'm not pinching or flicking her cheek hard like you would your husband or another adult. It's like a flutter; enough for a reaction to unlatch. I assure you it's not child abuse.

my LO went through a mini biting phase, but even though it didn't last long, i was scared to nurse during that time! I remember getting the advice that having no reaction is best. For example when you give a stern no, she may find that funny that she caused a reaction so it could be reinforcing to do it again. So i would keep my reaction to myself (as difficult as that was) and then say "oh i guess you are done breastfeeding) and stop nursing for a bit. Eventually he stopped.

Bumping this thread.
We are having such a rough time I am in tears writing this. DS just turned 9 months and up until now we have had a great nursing relationship. For the last week he just bites me as soon as I start to latch him on. He looks up and laughs at me and I don't know what to do. I immediately stop the session but I'm at the point where he is not nursing at all except his first feed when he wakes up and is still sleepy.
He has had 4 teeth pop in the last few weeks and I'm sure that's part of it. I'm just worried he isn't getting enough nutrients. Has this happened to anyone for a length of time? I don't know if I need to start supplementing with formula or if it is ok because he eats a ton of solid food. We are starting whole milk soon too. I don't want to stop BF but I don't know what to do.

I let myself really yell (not hard, biting really hurts) then I would quickly put ds down and walk away for a minute or two. It felt like a really extreme reaction but I realized that it had to be Swift an because he thought it was silly I needed to not be there so it clearly wasn't a game. His teeth are new and he's just figuring it out, but man that sucks. It will pass...

@delight: In June, so 8-ish months for us, Ds started biting me every time he started nursing. I couldn't just stop, because then he wouldn't eat at all, so wasn't sure what to do. I think a lot of it was figuring his teeth out, because even when he didn't bite down he'd leave teeth marks.
I found on Kellymom that issues when starting can be due to a bad latch, so pay attention when started. Also when he bites to push him towards the breast instead of pull away because it will hurt less.
2 months later he seems to finally figured it out and my nipples no longer have chunks of skin missing from them.

@maddyz: I definitely let him know it's unwanted. I don't know why it's so hilarious to him. I'm thankful he still eats a lot when he first wakes up. I hope it passes soon.
@Miss Ariel: I tried pushing him towards me today and it did work once after his afternoon nap. Thank the lord! That's great your DS eventually stopped. I hope this is short lived for us.
