My midwife called the ob. She told me if I'm still having problems she'll help me find another one. (My midwife is a very strict and direct person, she lectures midwifery at the university and knows everything, sometimes better than the obs. I guess every one is afraid of her, I was at first, but she's also very nice and kind) I have no idea what she told the ob but the ob called and told me that she cannot believe how nicely my numbers are doubling and although she thinks a lot could be wrong I should consider myself pregnant and be happy and she will take good care of me... She than told me she has a new theory, that maybe I lost a twin and one is still developing nicely. But that she needs to see me at least twice a week to see that everything is good and that it's not ectopic.
    Soo, what do you think?

@lil owl: I don't really have any advice, but I've been following this thread and I wanted to say I'm very glad to hear that your midwife stepped in and that your bleeding stopped! If it were me, I'd probably try my best to switch unless I knew I could trust the OB again.

I'm so glad your midwife was able to talk to the OB. If it was me, I'd still try to find another OB. You already have a midwife that you have a good relationship with and she can be a good to person for you, but I don't think I would be able to deal with that OB for 9 months personally.

@lil owl: oh yay, that's good news all around! With your OB I think I'd personally do the following: see how the next appointment goes and if you still feel awful about her take your midwife up to her offer to help you find another one.

@lil owl: I'm glad you have found another advocate in the MW. That all just sounded ridiculous if your #s were increasing. Do the 2x wk visits mean betas drawn or what? Best of to you!!

That sounds like a really good plan of action and I'm glad they are giving you the respect and time you deserve. Its scary to think this could still very well be a viable pregnancy and they were so ready to jump the gun and do a procedure.

Hooray! Good for you for sticking with your gut and for your m/w setting your OB right! I would look into finding another OB for sure though... I wouldn't trust my care with that person after everything they put you through already!! H&H 9 months to you!!

I had a long ectopic, and my hcg #s never got even close to that high. Fingers crossed for lots of good updates!

Wow I've been following this and am so glad the midwife stepped in and that you trusted your gut! It's scary to think what would have happened if you just went with what OB recommended. Which we should be able to! (I tried replying before but LO kept grabbing my phone lol). I hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months

Here we go again: I had blood drawn this morning and my ob just called and told me my # doubled but refused to tell me the exact #... Then she went on that she needs to see me tomorrow to do an u/s and when she won't find it in the right place it's ectopic etc. I'm 4w5d she won't find anything. Ugh. So frustrating. Why can't she just once say it's ok, everything's good, we need another look but for now its ok???
So I'll go there tomorrow. If she stays that way I won't go see her anymore.

At least the bleeding is still gone.

I'll see my moms GP tomorrow after the ob, so maybe she knows something.

Oh, and she said I need to stop nursing DS because nursing is bad when you're pregnant and DS is old enough for formula?!?!?? (I won't do that, especially since the bleeding stopped)

@lil owl: Hopefully they will see a tiny sac in the right place! Can you call another office in town and explain that you need to be seen ASAP because you've had early bleeding with rising betas? If they ask why, it's because your trust in your current provider has been compromised. Then ask your OB's office to release records to you. I don't know the entire story...but "when" rather than "if" she doesn't find anything sounds ridiculous! And you really shouldn't have to deal with this right now. FX and wishing you a healthy 9 months!

@lil owl: I would demand the hcg number. Also, do not get upset if she can't find anything on the ultrasound. Especially if she does an abdominal one. If you're only about 4 weeks along she's not going to see anything anyways.

I found this about ectopic pregnancies:

    - Plateauing hCG levels can indicate ectopic pregnancy
    - With good vaginal probe ultrasound a normal singleton pregnancy can be seen by the time the hCG level reaches 2000 mIU/ml
    - By 5 to 6 weeks of pregnancy (1 to 2 weeks after the missed period) all normal pregnancies in the uterus should be seen by vaginal ultrasound
    - 20-30% of ectopics have no detectable abnormality on ultrasound
    - The usual finding for ectopic is a mass on one side, some fluid in the pelvis, and no normal pregnancy structures in the uterus
    - Conclusive diagnosis of ectopic by ultrasound can only be made if a fetus or fetal cardiac motion is seen outside the uterus
    - This is only seen in about 20% of ectopics with vaginal ultrasound

But honestly, your doctor sounds like a quack. I would find alternate care ASAP, as she sounds like there's no convincing her this may be a viable pregnancy.

@lil owl: What does your midwife say? Can you see the OB she's associated with?

I'm SO happy that your midwife was able to help advocate for you, and SO frustrated with your OB. The bleeding stopped and your numbers are doubling, I understand keeping a close eye on you but not all of this negativity. And the breastfeeding comment really makes her lose a lot of credibility.

    grapefruit / 4441 posts

@lil owl: What the heck?! I would call back and say you need to know your exact HCG number. My OB practice likes to keep that info to themselves as well, but I always make them tell me. Depending on your HCG level and number of weeks pregnant, they may or may not be able to see anything on the u/s.

Has she tested your progesterone level? I would expect her to do that before telling you not to breastfeed. I believe knowing the progesterone number can also be helpful when trying to rule out an ectopic. During my first pregnancy (that ended in miscarriage), I had increasing but not quite doubling betas and they were worried about an ectopic. I remember they checked my progesterone level and waited until my HCG was over 1000 to do a vaginal ultrasound. They were able to see an intrauterine sack (and I think maybe a yolk sac or fetal pole?) at a beta of around 1400.

@lil owl: Nursing doesn't cause miscarriages and I was nursing when I got pregnant and my dr was not worried at all. I'd switch dr if there is anyway, I couldn't trust this one.

@lil owl: What the heck?!?! I had one doctor tell me that my pregnancy was likely ectopic because I was having pain in my abdomen. It wasn't, the baby was right where it should be and now I have a healthy one-year-old.

I'm sorry your OB is being this way. I definitely wouldn't be able to trust her again after this.

@lil owl: I'm scared to ask but how did it go today? Was your OB nice or being nasty again? Did she find the pregnancy in utero? Thinking of you!

Do you have access to your medical records online? I do and can typically see test results there (although I'm not sure if the beta numbers would be included). Thinking about you and definitely don't let her get to you!

I went to see my ob and she was like: “well, I know this is not possible. I already talked to my colleagues about you... they don't believe it either. But it looks like you are REALLY pregnant. Maybe you should start taking folic acid. And maybe you should tell your husband now.”
I wanted to say I told you right away I am pregnant! And I'm already taking prenatals for month. And of course my husband knew all along because do you really think I would go through a miscarriage without telling him? But I said nothing.
She wasn't sorry or anything. She didn't apologize, she didn't even admit she was wrong. She just said something is not right with me, but obviously I'm pregnant...
