I know there's a lot of us from the Boston area on here, and I was wondering if anyone had experience giving birth at Emerson hospital? I hear a lot of differences between people's hospital experiences here, and I was wondering if anyone had been to Emerson and wanted to share.

One of my childhood best friends was born at Emerson... but that was over 30 years ago! I'm no help. Sorry!

I didn't but my friend did and has nothing but good things to say about her experience there. I visited her there and it seemed really nice, if that helps. Hopefully someone else has more info!

I'm considering it (we go to the same MW practice, but I'm not pregnant yet) but my mom threw a fit saying it's a lesser hospital to NWH, where my old OB/GYN was based. I have a few friends who have delivered babies there with no complaints (at least that I've heard). There was a story several years ago about a woman who contracted a flesh eating bacteria after a c-section there, and I think it's gotten a bad rap with some people since then. http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/news/x225119941#axzz2WatceDw1

@Shutterbug: I know my friend saw midwives for most of her pregnancy, but an OB was the one who delivered the baby (just who was on call). She didn't mind at all though.

@Shutterbug: Oh boy, I hadn't heard that story! At least it wasn't recent. NWH would be pretty far for us. Would you switch practices? I've been liking them more than I did at the beginning. Mitra was really nice and helpful when I had vertigo, which is more than I can say for my primary dr.
I toured the hospital and I liked it, I was just curious about hospital-specific experiences. Were there snacks? Were the nurses nice? Did they make you turn down the epidural to push? Things along those lines.

@MrsCB: Mitra was for sure my favorite. I would maybe switch, but I haven't put much thought into it yet. NWH is pretty far for me too, compared to Emerson, but it's doable.As for the lady with the bacteria, they've completely renovated the L&D center since then, so I wouldn't worry.

@Shutterbug: Well make sure whichever hospital/practice you pick you're ok with going there repeatedly during the work day. There aren't really any viable hospitals near where we work unfortunately :(. The 25 minute drive to Emerson, there and back is an hour, plus a good hour for the appointment. It just kills my day if I can only get a 2:00 appointment.

@Shutterbug: I know! I would've just stayed with my old GYN and be 5 minutes from there during the day. *sigh* oh well.

@MrsCB: one of my good friends had both of her boys there. The new birthing center is BEAUTIFUL! And I was super impressed when they came in the room to do all the newborn screenings while I was in there with her instead of taking him to the nursery. I know their midwives were fantastic with this friend. She had some complications (placenta retention/blood transfusions, both births), she was able to have her unmedicated natural births in the water. They also offered reiki services to help with her labor (though she said it actually calmed her down so much that the contractions slowed down at one point, lol). I thought that was pretty cool!
