Did you ever feel like breast feeding is about so much more than just getting some good nutrition into your little one (and bonding)?
I have never felt so disappointed in myself as when he's throwing himself screaming at my breast, not latching and we're both losing it.
I have also never felt so proud of myself as when watching his little chin quiver when he's successfully drinking breastmilk.
What a roller coaster!

So true. Getting it right feels like such an awesome accomplishment and struggling with it is such a heartbreaker.

I agree. I also think it's funny. When she can't latch on, she snorts like a pig and it cracks me up! Is that awful of me? Our nickname for her sometimes is Piggy instead of Penny!

So true! When I'm feeding him at my parents house, I get awful looks when he cries and can't latch on, once he does - only I feel like I've triumphed! A definite emotional roller coaster!

Yes, she's usually such a great latcher. But for some reason the last week she occasionally freaks out at the boob. Acts like she doesn't know how to latch on. Sometimes switching boobs does the trick sometimes it doesn't.
It's so frustrating sometimes I have to just hand her off for a few minutes, walk away and come back.
The worst part is I *know* she's hungry but then she won't take the boob OR bottle!

@bpcmarj: Exactly! He snorts, and he bangs his mouth against my nipple and screams ah-uh-ah-uh-ah-uh! like if he bangs his mouth against it he'll magically get a latch. It's funny until I realize he won't get it. And then it's hard not to cry (I usually do).

@pastemoo: couldn't agree more! We had a rough go at it at first and I almost gave up after a few days. I felt like a failure and inadequate that we had such a hard time with it. LO is 9 days old and it's still a challenge - different issues every day. I'm glad I'm still working at it and things are sovmuh better than 5 days ago. Good for you for keeping at it!!

@pastemoo: Girl, breastfeeding is literally the most challenging thing Ive had to do as a new mom. Forget pregnancy and delivery the feeding so demanding, emotinal, and diffcult. Im 4 weeks with my girl today and still have my bad days. Sore nipples, exhaustion, is she getting enough? DH sleeping while Im sucked, nibbled, and chewed on for reasons which are way less pleasurable then they used to! Latches which hurt, sensations which make your skin crawl, fear about production, infection, etc etc.
It is something I havent given up on even though there were so many days I thought id throw the towel in. When you bring that baby for a weight check and theyve gained or when they nuzzle into you cause they are comforted at your breast/body alone makes it all worth it.

Exactly! Most rewarding and most frustrating thing for me too.
Lately mine hasn't wanted to breastfeed the past 3 afternoons (mornings and night he feeds normally), while I'm not having a meltdown about it anymore, my feelings still get hurt and I get very frustrated.
I'm expecting that the next time around the process should get a little easier since I'll have a better idea of what to expect, but I don't think the next baby would be as easygoing as my son is.

@winniebee: yes! sooo glad i didn't give up. he's nursing right now and that little quivering/swallowing chin is so cute!
@Nskillet: totally. no one warned me this part would be so hard!
@lemondrop: Aww. i know. i get so down when he s screaming andwon t latch. i'm lucky now-- 5 or less times per day with the screaming and frustration, yesterday only 3 times!
