Breastfeeding didn't work out for my lo and me. He was breastfed for a couple weeks but kept losing weight. I'm more knowledgeable and determined to bf baby #2 though. Not pregnant but if say we have a little one within the next 2 years and I am able to keep my supply up would it be totally unheard/impossible to give pierson (who would be a toddler at that point) some breast milk... Would he still reek the benefits of it? I realize I prob wouldn't be able to breast feed him normally ( I have no problem nursing a toddler at all) but given that he doesn't know how to bf anymore I would imagine that he would need it in a sippy cup.
Am I totally crazy to think this?!?!
Also its very very important to me that pierson gets some breast milk like his sibling. I understand that this may not be possible though. I just want both my babies to get it somewhat.

I don't think it's crazy at all! If you're able to pump extra, why not give him some in a sippy? I've also heard of people putting it in smoothies and stuff.

I have the same q. If all goes to plan: E will be 18m when LO #2 is born. I wonder if I pump anything, if he would benefit from drinking it in a sippy cup or even mixed into oatmeal or something?

Not crazy and TOTALLY possible! Breast milk benefits EVERYONE regardless of age and since our immune systems are fully developed until around age 5 then Pierson would totally get benefits there!

I'm too much of a wuss to nurse my toothy 16 month old so I gave her a cup of pumped milk the other day with her dinner.

Aw. You are such a sweet mama for thinking of your oldest! You are not crazy, and he would totally benefit from the milk. I would also highly recommend doing some research and being proactive now about what you would like to do to increase supply and get nursing off on the best foot possible. I'd be happy to share what I tried (I was able to nurse without supplementing the second go-round) if you think it might help. Above all, just remember that no matter the outcome, if you would like to nurse, you can, and no matter how much or how little it is still beneficial (to both kids! and you...) and you can (and will) still have a nursing relationship. One thing I'd love to share with moms who supplement when they would prefer not to is that, having done both, I can honestly say that my nursing relationship with my oldest was just as special and "pure" as it is with my youngest.
@Turtledoves; good ideas; just watch the temperature if you mix with heated foods (temps too high can kill some of the "good stuff" in the milk). -

@runsyellowlites: OK another weird.question so you think it would be possible to actually get p to latch on and breastfeed? I tried just put of random curiousity to see if he remembered how to bf at 7 months and he didn't. ( omg I realize that sounds super strange!).

@stargal: I think it's possible. I've read that after 6 months of age it's generally difficult to get a baby back to the breast but I'm sure it's not unheard of! Personally I think that even if he saw his baby sister/brother doing it he might pick it back up?.. I know lots of toddlers that did this after weaning while mom was pregnant & then pick it back up after baby was born & supply was back. I know kellymom has some info on getting baby back to breast too so maybe some of her info might help?!
I dream of tandem nursing so I don't think it's weird to have a desire or try & get him back to the breast.

I've tried pumping a sippy full of milk like 2-3 for DS2 now that he's older and every time DS1 steals it because he loves it. Lol. Breastmilk is so good for him so I definitely let him drink it. If i were able to pump good I might pump here and there just for DS1.

@Stargal-- one thing you can try is to trigger your letdown (using a manual pump, your hand, however works for you) and then let him (P) try to nurse. He would have a much easier time that way.

@stargal: I hope BFing #2 works out (weight-wise) but even if it doesn't, you can still nurse #1 because he will be using it as a supplement to his diet and his weight is of no concern -
