My LO is 2 weeks old and at some point I'm going to have to breastfeed in public (well, at least out of our house). I'm super modest, but I'm trying to get over that. What's your favorite nursing cover? There seems to be several styles - hooter hider, shawls/wraps, etc.
Did you practice feeding at home before going out?

i have the dria which is quite lovely, but is a little pricey. mrs hide and seek recently posted one that's cheaper and looks super cute!

I never practiced at home, but didn't have problems when we were out and about. I often just used an Aden & Anais muslin blanket too.

I have a Bebe Au Lait cover that worked well! I definitely practiced at home with a cover before nursing in public...LO hated it at first!

actually i remember olive hating my bebe au lait cover. how soon you forget all these things! so i used to use an aden and anais blanket in the beginning. once she mastered breastfeeding though, she didn't care what cover we had. it was only tricky in the beginning.

I either used an A&A blanket or layered clothing. Id wear a stretchy tank under whatever I was wearing on top (sweater, cardigan, etc) so I could pull my top layer up and the tank down on one side. Almost nothing was exposed, and even then I would sometimes use the blanket. I also wore those drapey open front cardigans and used that as a cover. I never practiced at home. For the longest time I would carry a bottle of pumped milk with me bc I was so scared to feed her in public. One day I ran out and had to do it and it wasnt as scary as I imagined it =o)

I use an Udder Cover that was gifted to me. I think its similar to the Bebe Au Lait covers.
I didn't practice at home but the first time I BF in public was in the ladies lounge at Nordstrom. Because its relatively quiet and private, it made it a bit lower stress.

I use a Bebe Au Lait cover. It did take some getting used to and in the beginning, I needed DH to help me adjust it. L didn't mind the cover for the first few months, but starting around 6 months, she started fighting it and it's harder to keep her under it now.

I used to use a Booby Trapper. I love it because it has a double rim so the fabric is not touching her face. Now I just do what @LivsMama: does either an A+A blanket or layered clothing.

As it goes in the parenting world!!! I'd been thinking about the Dria cover, but with the price wasn't sure if it was worth it.

LO's not here yet but I liked the Dria. I couldn't justify the price for a poncho especially because I figured if I liked it I would want more than one - so I made my own. I like it even better because I customized the length and color. I sew, but it is incredibly easy to make a poncho even for a beginner. I like my Udder Cover and have had no issues with it. I also sometimes just use a muslin blanket instead, which works just as well. I never practiced but DH and I did make a special trip out for lunch when LO was a week old specifically for me to try it out in public and get used to feeding anywhere. It was no big deal and not that hard.

I loved our bebe au lait! It has a little metal thing so the cover props up a bit and you can peek at your baby while you're BFing.

I have an udder cover as well. A blanket would never work with us. My LO would pull it off in two seconds flat! He is the world's squirmiest nurser!

I use a Bebe au Lait, but C hates it because it gets super hot... and I haven't quite mastered the nipple insertion part yet. I feel like I have to have her face in the open to get it in, then cover us up, but then I feel like my nipple is on display for everyone. If I try to do it with her face covered, I spray milk everywhere!
@JerricaBenton: I don't have a sewing machine and I can't do anything crafty involving fabric... would you be willing to make one & sell it to me? LOL! I've seen them on Etsy, too!

@HabesBabe: Haha, I think I have crafting performance anxiety and I never think what I make is good enough to give to another person, let alone sell! If anyone you know has a sewing machine, all they have to be able to do is sew a straight line! If you go to the fabric store and measure it on your body you'll barely even have to cut it! If you want to borrow a machine and try it out I can definitely answer any questions/talk you through it

I also just did layering and pulled the top up and the tank down. Now she refuses to let me nurse anywhere interesting, so I think our public nursing days have come to an end.

@HabesBabe: Haha, they'll probably fray. In the tutorial I posted, you basically fold a piece of fabric in half, right sides together, and press a hem around the bottom and short side and stich, and then stitch across the top to a spot that you've measured and marked for where you want your neck hole to be. Then you turn in right side out and press the neck hole seam down and stitch around to finish it off. Easy, right?

I've been having trouble mastering this. We're still at the point where I need to guide him to latch on. I can't wait until I can just use a cover- it'll make life so much easier !

So, right now on Babysteals they have Bebe Au Lait/Hooter Hider covers for $17.99...with shipping it would be $21.50 (for my location). I'm torn on whether I want the apron-looking kind or if I should hold out for something more stylish! Anyway, if you're looking for a cover that might be a good option.

I have the udder cover and tried to use it in the hospital but because it is still such a production for him to latch on...I found the cover to be annoying.
I did practice using it and liked that it covered everything: despite that I have no real use for it yet -
I have the petunia pickle bottom Haven and love it. It's bigger and folds into its own little bag.

I have an udder cover but haven't used it publicly because to me it just screams nursing cover. Most times I use an a&a blanket and it works great.

Now I use an a and a blanket but in the beginning I always used my bebe au lait cover. I also have another cover that I don't like as much but don't remember the brand and it doesn't say on it. The only difference I see between the two is that the bebe au lait cover has a stiffer neckline so it makes it easier to look down and see what's going on.

I was gifted a Dria but I wonder if it (or really other covers) will be hot in the summer?
