Brock Turner court case -- is this real life?!

@NorCalWayfarer: For a second I thought it was something ran by his 'camp', but I'm starting to think it's just a crazy internet fan that looks up to him
None the less creepy that these people exist in our world though.

And this whole case is infuriating. As a former sorority girl, an attorney and as a mother, I'm outraged and horrified by this blatant continuation of rape culture. I will teach my son about feminism, consent, respect and how to be a good human so if he's ever in a situation like this HE'S the one stopping the assault and coming to aid. This reminds me of that affluenza case -- entitlement, lack of respect for other humans, lack of role models at it's finest. Sickening.

@swurlygurl: I don't think it is Brock. Probably a friend or fan of his. It is sad to see 13 people like this comment. WTF!

@bluestriped bee: Yeah, I'm really hoping so. That first comment threw me for a loop because of the specific use of pronouns, but the rest of the page reads as a fan is running it.
That whole page is just... unreal...

@Truth Bombs: Oh, so very true. I don't have son yet, so I am not even contemplating how I would raise one. And you are right that we can't protect our girls from every boy out there. It sucks that we have to worry about this for our kids. Or even for ourselves! Hey.. I like to go out for drinks with the girls at a bar still! (*still* being those times when I'm not pregnant)

There was a quote I read the other day that really hit me hard in regards to this topic of rape culture:

'If you're promoting changes to women's behavior to "prevent" rape, you're really saying, "make sure he rapes the other girl."

This makes me sick. I read the victim's statement yesterday and was just disgusted by what happened to her and how he is basically getting off with a slap on the wrist.

Just wow! We have to do a better job with our boys/ young men. WTF is up with that judge?!

@stiletto_mom: read the victim's court response. I had no idea rape kits were so invasive. Victims get re-victimized over & over.

@MrsSCB: this case has really disturbed me but in some ways reminded me of the affluenza teen case. The justice system in this country really doesnt make any sense to me most of the time. Its very rarely that I am ok with the sentencing. its either letting people get away with murder or overly harsh. People get multple years for possession of small amounts of marijuana but then someone kills a person and gets probation. In this case I really hope there are still harsh penalties for the offender once he gets out such as having the criminal record and being on the sex offender list and hopefully not being accepted back into the circles that he was in

  14. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@Mrsbells: yes, I also thought it was reminiscent of the affluenza case. And I said basically the exact same thing to my husband, "there are people who have literally been in jail for a decade plus for drug possession and this kid gets six months?!!" It makes no sense.

Hmm, if someone took 20 more minutes of action to break this guy's nose, that would be ok? Because it's only 20 minutes?

I read the victim's letter but watching Ashleigh Banfield from CNN read the letter... Wow!

So happy she was a voice for this victim!

DH and I were discussing this last night and I was so fired up. What was one of the worst things (and it is hard to choose because of all the disgusting things that have come of this trial was from the father's statement that included the phrase "20 minutes of action." What father can call a sexual assault this, the woman was unconscious and his son was on top of her, who knows how much further it would have went had it not been for those bikers. This family is disgusting.

@LuLu Mom: It is hard to choose the *worst* thing, because everything is awful! I still can't believe that the JUDGE only gave 6 months because he didn't want to impact the kid's future... WTF???

  21. BSB

hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts

@LuLu Mom: sadly, the father probably still thinks his son is innocent and she was conscious and gave consent.

DH and I talked about it and we would be devastated and ashamed if our son did this.

Yeah, the 20 minutes of action part from the dad and also the mention of his son not being interested in steaks is so out of touch.

hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts

Did anyone see that they plan on appealing the conviction? What does that mean for the victim? Could she go through another trial?

Did anyone also see that the maximum sentence would have been 14 years and that Turner requested a 4 month county jail sentence! Ugh!

I'm also disgusted that the probation officer recommended a light sentence. What are the chances this guy will offend again? He's what? 19. It wasn't a mistake. And he's accepted no responsibility or ownership of the situation which means that he won't see his conduct as wrong or try to get help.

@muffinsmuffins: I just came here to say that. Leslie Rasmussen's letter is a case study for tape culture, holy crap. It makes the dad's letter pale in comparison.

    @muffinsmuffins: Wow...

How do people not understand that if you RAPE someone, you ARE a RAPIST. WTF is wrong with people???

  27. periwinklebee

    grapefruit / 4466 posts

@muffinsmuffins: All I can say is wow, just wow. This is disturbing on so many levels: "But where do we draw the line and stop worrying about being politically correct every second of the day and see that rape on campuses isn’t always because people are rapists."

If being politically correct entails not raping people, please, bring on all the political correctness... I am really tired of people who want to do and say whatever they want, whenever they want, no matter how much it endangers others, blaming the fact that society still has some modicum of moral decency on political correctness.

Her letter was so ridiculous. Like, well I did murder that guy, but it was just one time, I'm not a murderer! Yeah, no....

  29. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@swurlygurl: Maybe she's confusing "rapist" and "serial rapist?" Like, yeah, he just did it once (so far), so he's not a SERIAL rapist. But he's still a rapist...

  30. swurlygurl

    honeydew / 7091 posts

@Adira: Apparently! She is crazy... I sure hope he goes on to lead a productive life, NOT raping people, but with the people he is surrounded by, it really doesn't sound like anyone thinks his actions are a problem!

  31. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@muffinsmuffins: I read about three sentences of that, and had to stop because I was getting too pissed. And for the love of of God, can people stop using "politically correct" as a catch-all pejorative? That is a pet peeve of mine. Also, "rape on campuses isn't because people are rapists"? That's funny, because I'm pretty sure rapists are exactly, specifically and solely the cause of rape on campus. FFS.

  32. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@swurlygurl: Yeah, I mean, it's no wonder this guy raped someone (and continues to believe he did nothing wrong) with all the people in his lives brushing it under the carpet!

  33. snowjewelz

I decided I am not going to read that for now to further infuriate myself! This is disgusting!

  34. littlebug

This is why rape survivors don't report their assaults. It's why I didn't.

As a mother to a boy and a girl, I plan to tell both of them about my experience. But honestly, I think my primary responsibility is to talk to my son. I expect him to respect his future partners. I want him to understand the damage it does when you don't respect someone else's body.

  35. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@littlebug: Yes, we spend way too much time telling girls, "Don't go there, don't wear that, hold your keys in your hand in case someone attacks you in the parking garage..." and not enough time telling boys how to treat women with respect. Too much focus is on teaching women how not to be raped rather than teaching men to not be rapists. I hope I can raise my son to be like the two men who saw something was wrong, stopped it and didn't let this guy get away with what he was doing. Unfortunately, the judge basically let him get away with it...but those two guys are heroes. And I'm sorry for what you went through. I'm sure things like this are hard to read about and we NEED to do better.

@littlebug: I am sorry you had to experience that, and even more sorry that our system is so messed up that you didn't report. I worked in the jusrice system for a long time and my heart hurts for women and girls everywhere that have no voice because of this.

Despicable. Just no words. This judge has a history of making these kinds of decisions. I know a victim from a prior case and the men in that case served no time thanks to this judge.

Does anyone know if you have to reside in CA to sign the recall petition? This whole thing makes me sick.

@bluestriped bee: yes, if my son did this I'd be heartbroken, but I would make him accept the consequences and work on trying to fix whatever was so broken in him that made him feel it was okay to do what he did.
