Did you buy a breast pump before or after your bub was born? People (ok..my SIL, who has "advice" about EVERYTHING) keep telling me to wait as certain ones might not work for me???? and that I should borrow one before I buy to see if I like it? Is this crazy talk? I'm more of a be prepared kinda girl, the last thing I want to worry about is finding a breast pump after LO is here. I'm a total newbie to the pumping world obviously, but wouldn't all electric breast pumps work for you... obviously some better than other brand dependant... but is it boob dependent too??

You could use a hospital rental in the meantime-I couldn't bf so they rolled a pump in immediately. Many insurances require you have the baby first. It's mostly preference I'd think. I have the PISA and the freestyle and they both feel different but its not like you can go try on pumps like clothes...

I am totally clueless about breastfeeding/pumping as well, but I just ordered mine today through my insurance. You can order 30 days before your due date with my plan. I wanted to have it in advance so I could learn how to use it and sterilize it before LO is here. I didn't want to worry with it after LO was born either!

@blackbird: @Pepper: They aren't included in my health insurance plan ( australian) and I'm not even sure you can hire them from hospitals here..especially not the smaller country ones where I will be....

I tried to order mine before LO was born, but because of various things with my insurance , I didn't get it until LO was about 2 months old. I really wish I had it earlier as it would have been great to figure out how to use it and start my freezer stash earlier. I have tried two brands ( Medela and Hygeia) and liked them both. I didn't find them to be that different, but it could be nice to know ahead of time if you need different sized flanges or anything like that.

I would 100% say have it on hand before baby is born. I wouldn't open the box (in case you do want to return it) but I would have it. LO ended up doing some damage from a bad latch and by day 4 I needed to pump some to get relief. There is no way I would have wanted to go out shopping for a breast pump the first day I was home with LO and with torn up nipples.

I second @T.H.O.U.: I got a great deal on medela freestyle ($200 off), so I grabbed it but didn't open the box. I didn't end up pumping for a few weeks, but was glad it was there when I wanted it.

I purchased a Ameda Purely Yours based on good reviews on here and it's MUCH cheaper than Medela! Call your insurance to see which brand they will comp you for.

I didn't get mine in the mail from insurance till LO was two weeks old. I wish that I had it right away.

@Mrs squirreld: My insurance lets me get a pump whenever (I don't have to wait to LO arrives), and your SIL's advice wouldn't work for me. I literally don't even have 1 friend that has a pump I could borrow to "test", and a hospital rental can work but I'm not sure my insurance covers it. I do know they cover 100% my buying one through one of their approved retailers.
So personally, I wouldn't want to chance waiting until LO gets here to figure it all out.

I wouldn't wait. I didn't get mine until my boys were one week old and I wish I had had it on hand right away when I got home from the hospital. Like PPs said, you can't try them out like shoes ... once you open the box it's non-returnable. I would just research out different models online, maybe visit the store to see them in person and then decide from there.

I'm not positive which type of pump my insurance covers, but from what I've heard they only cover manual pumps. I wanted an electric pump so when I found the Medela Pump in Style on sale, I bought it. I want to be prepared as possible before baby girl comes in September! I'm hoping the pump works for me. I've never heard that certain pumps might not work for everyone. I figured the main brands would be acceptable.

You definitely need something when baby arrives. I used it to try to stimulate labor and I'm so glad I did because then I knew what it felt like to have her latch on, if that makes sense. I got my free insurance one after she was born but I had borrowed a friends beforehand. So if you can't do that maybe rent one first?

I bought one after LO was born. I wanted to make sure breastfeeding was going to work for us before committing to such a large expense then having to deal with returning it if bf'ing wasn't in the cards.

I think you could certainly go ahead and buy one before. I don't know why a certain model/brand wouldn't work. If anything the flange might be the wrong size, but that's a possible issue with EVERY pump.
I happened to get mine after LO was born, because that's what insurance required. I got it 2 days later though, so no big deal.

@Mrs squirreld: I bought mine before my LO arrived. These days a lot of insurance companies pay for them so you might want to call them and see.
