Did you drink more caffeine after giving birth even though you were breastfeeding? Did it affect your lo at all? I'm all excited to drink a real coffee again after she arrives...and then I think about the caffeine effects, through transfer, on the baby.
Thoughts?

I didn't have very much caffeine while breastfeeding either ......but at least you can eat what you want. Sushi!! Yum yum yum.

I drank a can of coke very rarely while I was pregnant, but now I have one a day while BF. It doesn't seem to affect her at all. I read somewhere that as long as you drink less than 500 mg a day, you should be fine, but that seems like a lot to me! Some babies are more sensitive than others, so I'd start with a small amount and see how LO handles it, and then work your way up.

I have one cup of coffee about 2-3 days a week while breastfeeding and I occasionally have some iced tea at lunch. I haven't noticed any effect on LO.

I drank a cup of coffee a day while pregnant and have continued to do so while nursing. He doesn't seem to mind ; )

I didn't drink any caffeine the first 3 months of BF but now that LO is 5 months old, I will have a coffee or cappuccino 2 or 3 times a week. It doesn't seem to affect her at all.

I drank a cup of coffee everyday while breastfeeding but I used 2/3 coffee and 1/3 milk. I never had a problem getting him to sleep for his mid-morning nap.

I may have had a diet soda or two a day (I don't drink coffee) and he was always fine. The main thing is that if you're going to have caffeine, you really need to up your water intake to compensate. It can affect your milk production and the speed of your letdown if you aren't well hydrated, and caffeine obviously dehydrates.

@winniebee: Same here- cup of coffee/day through both pregnancy and nursing. Never seemed to have an impact on LO.

You'd be surprised at how much you can drink throughout. I'm pregnant now and I have a daily iced coffee, midwife says it's totally fine and for breastfeeding as well. They caution in cases of if you're a total caffeine junkie and suck down multiple red bulls a day. Coffee, soda, some chocolate, a morning latte, it's all fine in moderation. Just make sure you're also getting plenty of water to generate enough milk and avoid dehydration.

The La Leche League says you can have up to three caffeinated beverages a day, usually, without bothering your baby. The one thing I couldn't have was instant coffee -- for some reason by baby did not tolerate that (I know it has chemicals and stuff). But YES, have some coffee and see how it goes. Start in the morning for sure, just in case!

I drink a lot of tea. I limited to 1 drink when I was pregnant but now that I'm BF I don't really limit. It doesn't seem to bother her.

I drank a couple of diet cokes throughout pregnancy, but after baby girl arrived (and sleep deprivation set in) I gave and drank a cup and a half of coffee...worst decision ever. She was extremely fussy and I couldn't get her to nap to save my life (she was a week old at the time)..I guess.some babies are more sensitive than others (or maybe a cup and a half is too much caffeine!)

I've been afraid too because of the caffeine. Keeping her up and gassiness. Double whammy!

I usually try to avoid caffeine in the hour before breastfeeding. If I'm going to have a cup of coffee, I have it right after I feed LO. I've also heard that some babies are more sensitive to caffeine than others, so just keep an eye out, and see if your baby gets more wired and irritable after you've been drinking coffee. If not, then you should be good to go!

I greatly reduced soda during pregnancy- I have 1-2 a week typically since I stuck with that routine. I have a daily coffee or I wouldn't function without it, and always have since about 15 weeks when the bad morning sickness ended and I could stomach it!.
I usually have it soon after a big nursing session, since nursing makes me sleepy, and so hopefully the worst of the caffeine wears off before he nurses again. It has never seemed to noticeably effect him. I also drink several cups of tea or iced tea a day too, but I figure the amount of caffeine is minimal.

I didn't drink much, but if I wanted a diet pop @ a restaurant or a coffee I would just be sure to not drink it right before feeding her & try to time it that way.

I have not had this experience yet but I will share 2 stories: my mom said she drank coffee while bfing my brother and she always thought he was a hyper baby and now she thinks it was the caffeine. My SIL didn't drink coffee at all when she was pregnant and she has half a cup for the first time a month after my nephew was born and she said he wouldn't sleep all day!

@sloaneandpuffy: thanks for that info. I think I'll definitely try some, maybe after a feeding session, to see how it goes. I just can't wait to taste 'real' coffee again! 
@Mrs. Yoyo: right, I forgot that caffeine dehydrated. I'll definitely pay attention to that and up my water intake if I do have coffee or soda.
