@Charm54: good to know about ohana and HS rushing.. maybe we could do a LATE ish lunch so the rush wouldn't be too bad... but i'll keep that in mind! thanks
@T.H.O.U.: @nanilani: maybe I'm not naming it correctly..my friend was there in Nov and said there were kind of two gaston's.. one with the cinabuns and one fast serve.. i'll double check with her..
@Charm54: @looch: re the meals taking a long time.. DD is really into characters so that is why I am trying to hit as many character meals as possible. and DH is the one pushing for the deluxe meal plan.. he doesn't want to have to "worry" about figuring out what to eat so he wants to just know we can eat 3 meals a day wherever we choose. Also not sure how into the rides DD will be so I'm not too pressed about hitting all the rides, honestly. I think she'll enjoy the character meals more...

@MrsADS: doing the meal plan to try to get lots of character meals

@Ajsmommy: fair enough. I would budget at least 90 minutes per sit down meal, plus travel time. Waiting 20-30 minutes just to be seated isn't uncommon, especially at the more popular restaurants. And then an hour or so to eat, as you don't want to really rush the experience.

@Ajsmommy: there's Gastons Tavern but it's more snacks and beverages than a meal. It's worth a stop to use up snack credits (cinnamon buns, mmmm...Lefou's brew is also yummy). But I don't think you can use actual meal credits.

Clarifies here just snack credits on meal plan.

@Ajsmommy: I didn't write about the meals taking a long time, what I meant was that I wouldn't plan meals at different resorts on the same day. Like I would say Monday is Magic Kingdom, and I would do those meals all at MK...not lunch at MK then dinner at EPCOT for example. Going in between parks wastes a ton of time....but if you're really just going from meal to meal to see characters, then I suppose it doesn't really matter!

If your daughter likes character meals, check out 1900 Park Fare dinner (at the Grand Floridian, monorail ride from MK). Cinderella, the stepsisters , stepmother and Prince Charming are there. It's one of the best character interactions we had. The stepsisters are hilarious!!

Sorry for the back to back posts, I just Kee thinking new random thoughts! 💭

@looch: Eh, we resort hop for meals every trip, especially dinner. There are too many tasty options at Epcot to miss! Getting from MK or HS to Epcot is easy, and afternoon nap/pool breaks at the hotel are also good for a reset. Just leave plenty of time for travel and consider your family's tolerance for dealing with transportation. I understand your preference is different from mine, but it IS doable without much stress.

@nanilani: Yes, agreed...parkhopping causes my husband to lose his mind...so we avoid that!

I also look at it like this, we're not there for the food and we don't look at it like a once in a lifetime trip...it's going to be there and we don't have to do everything that there is to offer.

@looch: the only day I thought* I was doing this was our HS day.. having breakfast off site and ohana ( I thought that was a the Polynesian?) and then we'd go to the park HS and spend the rest of the day there and have a late lunch at Hollywood and vine.. or did I mess up and my other days are park hopping?? we don't plan to park hop at all.....

@Ajsmommy: It was just a general statement about planning.

I personally like to limit my travelling time...it always takes longer than you think and I prefer not to run around while on vacation, but I know not everyone thinks this way! We even plan a day not to go to the parks and just stay at the hotel pool.

  13. nanilani

    apricot / 374 posts

@Ajsmommy: You don't have any park hopping in your restaurant plans. You can take a bus from the Polynesian to HS the morning you eat at Ohana. Allow plenty of time to get to Ohana though. It took us an hour to get to a Polynesian breakfast from WL! I'd recommend cabbing it, but that's hard to do with carseats

We had our own car so it was easy to do the early morning thing and then break around 1pm for an afternoon nap in dead heat for nice and energized evening hours back at the park. In that case, it would work to switch parks but we generally stick to one park per day for planning/Fast Pass/cost purposes.

Check closing hours. Sometimes they close early. On those days you wouldn't want to switch parks.

Did you say you had an open MK lunch? We did Columbia House and it was quick and good. Also BOG was a great pitstop but I think you nailed that down another time.

@nanilani: we will have a car so maybe we'll drive? not sure... @808love: did you find it easy to drive to places/find parking? we will have a car so that is an option for us.. I'm just not sure if it's more or less convenient than the provided transportation/bus

  17. nanilani

    apricot / 374 posts

@Ajsmommy: Yes, I'd definitely drive to Ohana if you have a car. Bussing between the hotels is more difficult in general because to usually have to transfer at a park or Disney Springs, and at breakfast time before parks open some of these may not be running yet.

I never have a car there, so I can't comment on how useful it is otherwise. At MK you'd need to park by the TTC and take the monorail or ferry to the park, so you might be better off taking the bus which drops you off right by the gate. Then again, my parents always preferred to take the ferry when we were young b/c they thought seeing the castle come into view over the lagoon was more magical. YMMV.

Another vote for Columbia Harbor House for lunch. Casey's is my husband's favorite. The tables are usually crowded, but I'd suggest taking your trays to the rose garden if you're up for a picnic. Right next to Casey's with grass to sit on, a view of the castle, and usually strangely empty.

@Ajsmommy: Yes, parking was surprisingly close at the parks bc we would arrive a little before park opening. If you are staying at AK it is a tiny bit further from other parks so driving would be more efficient. Also it depends how far your car is from the parking at the hotel. We stayed in value hotels where you could park right outside the door of your room. MK parking is always far though because you have to go transportation center to park. It was only one day of our five day visit. If I had a choice I would do car. It also makes Disney Springs more accessible. We also ate offsite with local mexican food one night both years.
Funny story- LO and I rode on the Disney bus to the hotel last year while DH drove the rental car. (He was flying in from a different state so came on a slightly later flight anyway. ) I really wanted to experience the bus but only for a short while.

    wonderful pear / 26210 posts

I've been dependent on the bus, and in all honesty, it's my least favorite form of travel. If you're travelling with a stroller, you have to collapse your stroller before boarding.

With a car, we're a little more flexible on our day and it's nice to have it to do something either at Disney Springs or offsite.

@Ajsmommy: I forgot to tell you the best princess breakfast tip- We got a Disney golden book (I am a Princess) from Wallmart before we left and all of the Princesses autographed on their own specific storybook page. LO loved reading that book for a long time when we got back. We even brought it out to read at her princess bday party. Anyway, all others signed on the inside covers. It is cheap, light and has a hardback cover so easy to write on. I slipped that in a gallon ziplock for protection with a sharpie and was always ready to go!!!! The princesses acted all excited when they saw their own page and was a good conversation starter. Also we brought our own tiara and packed a dress for those princess meals. Just changed in and out in the bathroom.

@808love: ah yes!! I was planning to do something like that! thanks! and yes we will be packing our already owned princess dresses.. no chance I'm buying one there! $$$$ (of course I'm sure if DD really wants one DH will cave for his princess)

  23. looch

    wonderful pear / 26210 posts

@808love: That's an excellent tip with meeting the princesses. Sometimes kids get nervous and aren't sure what to do when they see a character or princess, so having them be able to hand over something to sign breaks the ice.

    nectarine / 2636 posts

@Ajsmommy: the princess dresses are totally $$$, but they are so cute and unique to the park. My mom went before last Christmas and got DD a beautiful minnie and cinderella dress. But they were like $40-60. It was a perfect grandparent splurge gift. DD wears her dresses almost every day!

Eta: they said the best place for dresses in the parks was in MK. The best place for mickey hats was in epcot.

If you think you might buy a princess dress at the parks, try to pack a gallon sized ziplock or larger plastic trash bag to pack it for the way home. Many of them have glitter on them - especially the red Elena of Avalor dresses and some of the Cinderella dresses. I speak from experience and my favorite suitcase still has glitter in it!

@yoursilverlining: Haha, truth! Dd's cinderella dress still sheds glitter EVERYWHERE.

@Ajsmommy: book for 4. It's a head count thing for fire safety purposes.

@808love: love this!! Definitely going to do the s steal this idea for our next trip!

@Ajsmommy: book 4... even if they are only in a high chair they will still need a "place" at the table.

Another question : anyone buy dvc points AND a meal plan?? Am I reading it right that it won't link to your wristband or will it?? If it doesn't then how do you track your meals?

    Addl questions :
How does tipping work if you have a dining plan?

I see Cinderella royal table is TWO meals for dinner but is it also two for breakfast or lunch?

I didn't read through ALL the posts, and it looks like you've gotten some great recommendatoins and information. My only additional tip was to use Kenny the Pirate (www.kennythepirate.com) for character meet and greets. He tells you what characters will be where at what time and when is the best time to meet them with the least amount of wait time.

@Ajsmommy: we are renting points and getting the meal plan. The person you are renting from has to add the plan (and your magical express). Everything (park tickets, room key, fastpasses, dining reservations, meal plan credits, magical express info, photopass) will be linked to your reservation # and your magic bands.

When your rental company gives you your reservation number, put it in the My Disney Experience site/app and everything will sync up. After you've done that, you can customize your magic bands for each member of your party.

As for tipping, after your meal they will give you a receipt with how much your meal would have cost had you paid out of pocket, plus any additional expenses (extra alcoholic drinks, appetizers, whatever). They then have suggested tip amounts based on the total value of your meal. You can charge it to your room, pay cash, or credit. We put everything on our magic band so we literally don't have to carry a wallet! It can get dangerous to just tap tap for everything though haha

Cinderellas Castle is 2 credits no matter the meal. If you want Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, you should book that as soon as possible (180 days prior). You can time it to have a meal at C's castle right afterwards for a super magical experience! They are in the same building.

@Charm54: great, thanks!! I thought I was reading that the meal plans wouldn't link up so I am SOOO glad that they do! What a pain if they didn't. I did know that the owner of the dvc points had to "buy" the plan for us, I am just waiting on them to get the 2018 pricing to buy it! I can't wait!

@Charm54: and anyone else with meal plan. K knowledge --- if we get the deluxe plan we "get" three table service meals a day. Is it set up so that you can ONLY USE three per day? Or can you use more one day and less another day.

For example if we did Cinderellas table (2), for breakfast and then another place for lunch (1) and dinner (1) that's 4 in one day..can we do that and. Just lose 1 from another day?

  37. Charm54

    cantaloupe / 6885 posts

@Ajsmommy: yes you will get an allotment for the whole stay and you are free to use them as you want. We often get a quick service meal our first night so that we can "double up" on table services another day.

At the bottom of every receipt you will see how many meals (credits) you have remaining for your stay. Be sure to check them as they did make a couple of errors last trip that I had to have fixed.

Book dining via the app/online OR call the number? If I call can I make all reservations with the same person at that time?

  40. StrawberryBee

    nectarine / 2530 posts

@Ajsmommy: I've always used the website. Getting through and talking to someone takes too long. Prioritize so that the stuff that goes quickest is first booked. I think online opens before the phone lines do.
