I was just starting to look into doing some classes through the hospital and a birth class, which includes a tour of the hospital is $170! That seems pricey to me.
What did you pay for your classes? Or is there anything else I can do to help with the cost?

Our class package through our birth center was over $300, but it included newborn/postpartum care and a breastfeeding class, and was required for 1st time moms. I did use my HSA to pay for it, though. Do you have an FSA or HSA?

We did a childbirth + hospital tour and breastfeeding class. Both were covered under insurance.

I took a hospital class. It was 5 weeks, 2 hours per session with a hospital tour and it was $250, not covered by insurance.

I did an online, free "class", through babycenter. I wasn't interested in an all natural birth or anything, so it was just a "here is the birthing process" sort of course, and my OB said that was totally fine, and that if i was researching things on the internet, I probably wouldn't learn anything new from the class anyways. And it was fine. I think they're so expensive! And my husband's and mine's grad school schedules really didn't permit us to commit to a weekly or weekend class

@Eko: Yikes that does seem pricey! But maybe it's a regional thing? Or maybe it depends on how involved the classes are? Ours was $40, but it was just two 3 hour classes plus a tour of the hospital.
I do know at ours, not everyone in the class was delivering at that hospital. They attended the classes but then opted out of the tour. So maybe you can check around if there are other hospitals in the area offering a similar class?

Did you check with your insurance? If not, it is an eligible FSA cost.

Thanks for the input! I didn't really think it is something insurance would cover. I will definitely check with them and see if I can get something covered!

Our 5 week hospital based class (2.5 hrs per week) is $95. Extra 3 hr breast feeding, newborn, new dad, etc classes are $30 or $35 each.

The classes we're considering are through our hospital too. The cost $250 all together 2 hr classes once a week for 6 wks.

We were able to get our class covered through insurance when I looked into it (I think it was a little over $100). I was actually pretty surprised. The place that ran the classes just gave us a form to fill out and send to the insurance company on our first day there. I hadn't even considered it before that.

We found a one day class being offered free (plus free breakfast and lunch!) through a local pediatrician's office. They did try to get you to sign up with them, but had no issues if you declined (and we did). I wasn't willing to pay very much!

The only class I took was a breastfeeding class during my hospital stay. It was free.

All together we are spending just under $200 on classes. Including birthing, newborn care and breastfeeding. 7 classes total. We already did the tour, it was free. For just the birthing classes it was $90 I think.

That's close to what I paid, my hospital offered a class for $120. It wasn't covered by insurance.

Yikes! I thought mine was expensive at $90! And I live in an expensive area too. That is just for birthing, no newborn care or breastfeeding thats extra.

All of our classes were free except the 4 week childbirth class which was $80.

hospital tour was free, breastfeeding class was covered by insurance. I'm not sure what the childbirth class was, I think around $150? Since I delivered 6 weeks early, I actually didn't attend any of them -- oops!

Mine was $150 and wasn't affiliated with any hospital. It was some of the best money I spent. She focused a lot on labor and a little bit on breastfeeding/postpartum, but she walked us through a natural birth, what the operating room would look like if we had a c-section (and had pictures from a local hospital's OR), and the types of medications/interventions we had open to us in our area.

Thanks everyone for the updates and helpful information!! My insurance says that they will cover one course and any additional courses are out of pocket. I will certainly make sure they cover the most expensive one!

Mine was $250, it's s birthing/newborn care class plus hospital tour. It also gave me a free BF class. I was able to get some of it reimburse through a program from my insurance
