If you had back labor, did you have normal/noticeable contractions in the front too? As of last Thursday, baby was head down and in the normal, non-back labor position. I've been having back aches on and off since the weekend but more on since yesterday. I've woken up around 4am the last two nights with a back ache too. By morning it's usually okay. Today it's been coming and going but when it's here, it's constant. I don't really feel any discomfort in the front of my stomach though? It's all lower back and just bad pain. Am I losing my mind? Does this or could this mean something? I have an OB appointment in the morning so I'll obviously mention it then.

Hmm... I can't really remember what my contractions were like by the end when I was in active labor, but my initial back labor contractions were located solely in my lower back/butt area. I didn't feel anything in my stomach besides normal baby movement!

My pain during contractions started in my back and wrapped around to the front. Baby was in the right position.

The contractions in my back hurt so much more than the contractions in my belly that I badically didn't feel any of the contractions in my belly.

Zero contractions in the front and all back labor. It felt like I had a bad backache that would come and go, and then by the end like someone had my lower back in a fist that wouldn't ease up. I would definitely call your OB if it is constant.

Same as @Eko: and also I will add they come and go like normal contractions. They start peak and go away and are timeable. Maybe it will just take them getting stronger but they are noticeable contractions rather than "just" feeling achy for some time. I actually started with period like cramps then they went away and had two days of "just" back labor. You'll know!

@Adira: That's exactly where they are - lower back/upper butt area. Almost like I was lifting heavy things and pulled something? There's normal movement and firmness in my stomach.
@Eko: My back definitely hurts. But I feel like the pain is sticking around longer than what it would be for a contraction? I don't know?

@Tanjowen: That's really how you described it. Right now I'm okay, but a couple of minutes ago I wasn't. I have an OB appointment in the morning so I'll mention it then, unless things change before then.
@2littlepumpkins: Maybe they're not at the "time-able" stage yet? I feel like I'm going nuts and/or losing it!

With LO1 I felt alternating back and front contractions when labor started. As things progressed I only felt back contractions.

@LindsayInNY: it could be the start of something, but the contractions in the back are timeable like if they would be in your belly. Its hard to be reassured by the "you will know" but it's true. I clearly could feel each oncoming contraction with a peak and then the fading out. And they hurt so bad that they made me nauseous. Glad though that you have a dr apt, they should be able to give you a clearer idea.

I was in back labour with DD, but it was also an induction. It felt like my whole pelvis was being run over by a steamroller. I'm almost certain of the moment she turned because my contractions became bareable without counterpressure on my hips.

I never felt a contraction in my belly, it was all in my back. They took a really long time to get consistent (started at around 7AM as more like a sporadic back ache, and by 5PM they were consistent enough to time them).
When I was in active labor I couldn't even stand up straight. It felt like my back was being smashed with an electric sledgehammer over and over. If it is back labor, I found sitting and bending over my belly (or a standing bending over a counter), sitting hunched over on a toilet or being on my hands and knees were the most comfortable position...basically any position that would take extra weight and pressure of my back.

Never felt anything in my belly either.
For me it was a nerve-y pain, like bumping your funny bone times a billion, that sharp, tingly, electric feeling. It was so intense I would black out, my ears were ringing and I'd taste metal. I thought I was having a seizure!
I've heard that doing cat/cow yoga helps move the baby off your spine?

i have the lower back contractions. They come and go. Never felt more than cramps (period type) in the front. I did find that if I stretched (yoga style cat arch) that I would feel better. I had this same type contractions with LO#1. And it did cause me to dilate to almost 4cm by the time my water broke. Hang in there it hurts at times

@turkeylurkey: It's a hit or miss thing. They were on and off more at work, but have been minimal recently (for now). I have an OB appointment in the morning so I'll mention it then and see if I'm dilated any more. I wonder, assuming that's what this is, if it's early labor?

Mine started in the back and worked their way to the front, though the pain was very much localized to the back. I don't know if it's characteristic of back labor, but my contractions never became regular , just got way more intense. She ended up being posterior which didn't help things

@LindsayInNY: how early are you? Drink water too. My book says that dehydration can be a cause of early contractions like Braxton hicks

Then very well could be early labor. I'm 37 weeks and last week she checked me and I was dilated to about a 3.

@LindsayInNY: Could be! It definitely sounds to my non-medical self like something is going on! Mine definitely took a long time. From the first cramps to delivery was 2.5 days, about 1.75-2 of them being timeable stuff, but they NEVER got to be 10 mins then 5 then 2 apart. They'd get really close together then taper off. I went in and was 8 cm, but the last contractions at home were still 12 mins apart. (Like 3 apart, 3 apart, 3, 12, 3...) Back labor is a little weird!

I never felt contractions in my belly until I was pushing! Does your belly get hard when you feel the back pain? My labor came on hard and fast after my water broke, but my back labor was very distinct--the pain had a hard start and a hard stop, and my belly got REALLY tight when they were happening.
But, I also was crazy busy and went way overboard the week before I went into labor (hosting family for the holidays, etc), so I definitely had backaches the week before and maybe just didn't pay as much attention as you.

OB wasn't concerned about the back pain. Said it was probably baby's position even thought she's in the same position 95% of the time. She asked if my stomach gets hard which, it always is anyways, and said I needed to lay on the floor to accurately check. Yeah, because laying on the floor of my cubicle will go over well, LOL! I'm 90% effaced but only 1cm dilated so still cooking! Ironically, back was good most of the day yesterday too so who knows.

@LindsayInNY: I had a lot of cramping the last 2 weeks, especially in my back. It was more of a dull ache though...sort of like back period cramps. The day I went into labor I had them all day long, then got a full blown contraction in my stomach that night. I definitely knew the difference.
