I'm a few days over 38weeks and I've been having painful contractions since 1am (it's now almost 5am). they are the same pain/intensity as my last labor but they are hovering at 10min. Sometimes it's 5min and sometimes it's 15.
I'm so frustrated because they don't go away when I lie down (I've been trying to sleep for hours!) but they aren't getting closer together either!

Sounds like how mine started. If you want to move things along I'd suggest lots of moving around: walk stairs, go outside for a walk, curb walking. If you want to rest since you've been up awhile already take a warm bath and a Tylenol.

Mine were like this with baby #2, started around 3:00 AM. Stayed that pattern until around 10:00 AM when I started walking laps outside the house to encourage things along.

@Peasinapod: good to know your labor started like this too. With DS, they regularly got more frequent within a few hours so I'm not sure what to do with this. Everything I've read said false labor will go away with rest. And it's been 5 hours of not going away so I guess it's real? But just not progressing?

@Mrs. Deer: thanks! I'm going to go for a walk once the sun comes up a little. It's raining here so that's no fun but I do hope this thing gets going. Is weird to be in his limbo stage of not knowing if this is the real deal or not for so long!

@justjules: good plan! Even when we went to the hospital around 1:00 PM (OB's request) mine still weren't super close together or crazy difficult to get through. Just a very different experience than my first!

My first labor started with consistent contractions every 7-8 minutes for 24 hours. My midwives suggested taking an antihistamine and sleeping. I was afraid I would take it then things would progress, so I only took half of one, which wasn't enough to really let me sleep. I should have listened to them and done whatever it took to sleep, because my labor ended up being really long. With contractions that far apart, I'd consider ways to get some rest first!

@Mrs. Deer: that's what is confusing me....So different than my first labor. I've been preparing for this one to go quicker and now all of a sudden I'm stuck in a now almost 9 hour limbo!

@Iced Tea: eek. I've been so discouraged in the sleeping area. I literally didn't get any sleep last night so I'm exhausted but these contractions aren't going away.

I was like this with my second! The contractions hovered between 5-7 min all night long, but they did get more intense by the morning. There was no way I could sleep. I called the dr at 7am and they said take my time, but I can come in at 9am if I want. By then, they were 3-5 min and painful. Baby was born by 4pm. Hopefully this is it!

In a way my second birth seemed longer because I knew I was having contractions! With my first I thought they were just braxton hicks so I just dismissed them. With my second, I was having long, sorta painful contractions for about 24 hours before my water broke. But they were never close together, the closest were 15 minutes apart. Then my water broke and everything happened so fast! 5.5 hours later he was here.

My first labor was like that. So frustrating and painful. I wish I had taken the drugs the doctors offered me to help me sleep. It was a long haul. I hope things are progressing.

Thank you all for the replies and well wishes. Just wanted to update.... after 16 straight hours of contractions like those, they FINALLY got closer together. Baby Eden was born this morning!

Congratulations! My second labor was similar and it was so confusing because I was expecting it to be faster than my first. Not my experience at all! Glad it was the real thing for you and baby is here!
