For those with babies in day care, what's the teacher/child ratio at your center? Mine is 10 babies, 2 teachers. It's the state mandated size but still seems like too much to me. Every day care I visited was at this ratio. I visited today for a few hours and the teachers wee fantastic at multi-tasking and trying to cuddle with all nine babies (mine will be the 10th when she starts next week), but it just seemed like they could really use another pair of hands.

Here the law is 4:1 for infants, if that helps any.

0-18 months, it's 3:1. From 18-36, it's 5:1.

I would look for no more than 4:1 for infants under a year.

Ours is 4:1. Once he goes to preschool at 3. it'll be 7:1.

Texas mandates 4:1 or 10:2. It makes me angry that the state has such large ratios. I would LOVE 3:1. I have yet to find a day care that voluntarily is below the state standard. Sigh.

I've worked at a few daycares. The best ones go beyond state law. I worked at one where the ratio was 4:1 and one where the ratio was 5:1 for infants. In my experience, the higher quality places have lower ratios.
I teach pre-k and since its early childhood ed, we have ratios as well. Our state ratio is 12:1, but my program sets it at 9:1. As a teacher, I really appreciate that.

I only remember infant room since we will be in that one, 4 to 1.

I think Maryland law must be 3:1 because that was the ratio everywhere I looked. The first day care we had LO in only had 3 kids to two teachers for the first few months! Around age 2 (for LO it won't happen till he's around 29 months) they switch to 6:1, I think.

Ohio is 1:5 or 2:12. I think that seems crazy high.

Every state has their own set of regulations when it comes to teacher:child ratio and it depends on what type of child care setting, child care center, home care, etc...ratios are different.
I would look for no more than 1 teacher to 4 infants and the same would apply to toddlers (12-24 months).
Then the ratio changes for a child (25-36 months) 1 teacher to 7 children.
Preschool can be as low as 1:8, 1:10, or 1:12 at the max, shouldn't be more than that.
This is base on CA law.
I would always find the place with the lowest ratio and make sure that the teachers are all qualify (have 12 units in child or human development) with infant CPR skill.

4:1 in TN. My daughter's room is two teachers and 8 babies. Plus there are floaters so they can always call in an extra set of hands if they need it. Plus some of the babies are part time so it's not usually a full room.

In MA, it's 3:1. That seems like a lot to me!

I worked in the infant room at a daycare in MS, and the ratio was 5:1, all full-time babies. It got pretty intense at times! I think it should be lower than that.

Florida is 4:1 under the age of one. It's a good ratio but even that is tough.

Man, I really hate Texas and its crappy regulations right now. I'm really trying to make myself feel better about this and having a very hard time. If being a SAHM were an option, I'd probably be considering it right now. I'm trying to find some with lower ratios, but if I do I'm pretty sure there won't be spaces. I wish I had spent more time in the room earlier. There were only nine today and it seemed like too many.

@plaidpants: I think that must be for infants because I know of a bunch of in-home daycares around us that are 6:1! But I think they're only allowed to have 2 kids under the age of 1.
Ours is licensed for 10 kids with 2 providers, but they usually have 8 kids and 3 providers (which is part of the reason we chose them). Our LO will be the only baby under 1 when he/she starts.

I found a daycare that was 3:1 but it was over $2k a month.. ouch
