How do you define "extended breastfeeding"?

I always thought it was breastfeeding past one year.

I suppose it would depend on the context but generally I would say past the one year mark. That time makes sense to me since it's when you could stop formula, and transition to cows milk if you want.

I agree - I tend to think of it as breastfeeding beyond one year.

Thanks, everybody. DS turned one on Saturday and still nurses like crazy. I guess we are extended BFers!

In our culture probably a year. But as a norm for the world I would probably say past two.

Logically it makes sense to say a year, but in my mind I think of past 2.

I was wondering this as well... I had thought past a year but saw a meme that was pro "full term" bfing which made it seem longer. Hmm.

I think most people define it as past a year, but I consider it to be past two years.

I agree either above posts, past one year. Although I don't really consider it extended until 2.

In the US most would answer beyond 1 year. I, personally, consider up to 2 years "full term breastfeeding" since that's what the WHO recommends.

I would define it as past a year, but now that my LO is 7.5 months I've actually gotten a few surprised "oh! You're still breast feeding?!?" comments.

I echo the past 1 year in US, but 2 for most of the rest of the world.

@NurseMommy: I agree, I hardly know anyone that made it to a year so the fact that I went past a year was a shock to many. I don't think past a year should be viewed as extended or odd or anything but unfortunately its not the norm.

For me, it would be past 1 year socially since that's what most people think. But, personally, I wouldn't feel like we were extending BFing until we were past 2 years (which we likely will be at this point).
