Everything I read about giving birth kind of glosses over delivering the placenta. Is it really no big deal? It seems like you're so enamored with LO that it's not anything you even notice.
Was this your experience?

I don't remember delivering the placenta for either of my kids. I think the doctor just took care of it while I was focusing on baby.

I was so nervous about this! I had an epidural, and didn't feel it at all. After LO was here, and the cord was cut, she told me they were going to get the placenta out. I wasn't paying attention, and next thing I knew I looked over and she was standing over by the nurse and they were both inspecting it! Totally didn't even feel it come out!

With my first the placenta was actually pretty terrible. And then I had a lot of bleeding. A lot. BUT with my second it was kind of like "sllllllurp" there it is! TA-DA!
How disgusting was that, right?
Ok, and even worse, I had no idea about uterine contractions. With my first I felt nada, but with my second it was TERRIBLE! Days of cramping, especially while nursing--they felt like mild labour contractions. And my doula said they get worse with each kid. That's it. No more babies for me!

@woodentulip: Ack! My contractions were pretty bad this go around, and it was my first. I'm in trouble!

Not to scare you but I ended up having what's called placenta accretta (where the placenta does not detach). I had to be taken to the OR to have it removed when it didn't detach within 30 minutes. Very scary! And I totally did not think about the whole delivery of the placenta part too! But don't worry it's not common so I'm sure you will be fine!

I felt the Dr. tug on it to get it out. I think he also had to press on my stomach? I was so out of it I really didn't feel it. But I felt the stitches. :\ that was not a fun experience.

They had to tug a lot to get mine out, then press on my stomach for what felt like an eternity (and that shit HURT!) and I bled a whole lot.

I didn't notice it too much, they said they were about to deliver the placenta, then I felt a small tug, I had to give a small push, then it was out. During all this I was staring and talking to lo so I didn't notice it too much.

I don't even remember it. I think I pushed a little and it came out. The nurses pushing on my tummy afterwards was much worse.

@photojane: I totally thought that it was unfair that they didn't warn us more about that in our prenatal classes. I was totally unprepared!

Didn't even notice! We did look at it once it was out though, kinda neat

I had a natural birth and they were just like ok here comes the afterbirth...it slid out and that was that!
nectarine / 2163 posts
The midwives pushed on my stomach to get it out, and had me "push" a couple of times, and it slid on out. I had an all natural birth too.
I remember it felt really weird when it came out. Very... slippery. Lol

My doc had to use a bit of traction, then they asked me to push a couple times. The traction was the painful part. The placenta itself felt really gross IMO...kind of like what I would imagine a jellyfish coming out of you would feel like...ick!

Never even noticed it coming out - in my hospital, unless you request otherwise, it was standard practice to give a shot of syntocin in the thigh immediately after delivery to strengthen the contractions to expel the placenta. I had an epidural so I didn't care and never even felt it come out - nor did I even notice when it was out, I was too busy enjoying skin on skin time with my little bubby.
Also, I had heard about nurses 'massaging the uterus' after delivery to help the uterus contract back to its original size, but that never happened in my hospital. I'm not sure if it's because the syntocin they give works much more effectively at contracting the uterus, or if they just let the body do what it's supposed to do naturally, but either way, I was very relieved that did not happen. Just something to maybe think about.

I didn't even know. DH told me later it was 'weird looking' lol

I delivered my son, was holding him and they told me to push one more time, I did, and sorta felt the placenta come out and that was it! It was pretty easy! I had an epidural, but still felt a lot at the end.

I don't remember it coming out and I didn't feel it either - my epidural was great. They did hold it up and show us, and my doula took a photo of it - it's a lot bigger than I imagined it would be! Needless to say, that didn't make the photo album.

Ds was whisked off to the NICU, so I did pay attention to the after birth. It is like a minor version of labor if it goes normally. Afterwards, your body is completely done with contracting and you feel sooo much better. I delivered without an epidural, so I felt it all.

I felt it being pulled out but it didn't hurt it was a relief! Almost like taking a big poop and feeling awesome afterwards haha
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
The first time it felt like I pooped when I delivered it.
Second time I didn't even feel it.

I was enamored with LO! We were doing skin to skin and in the midst of the hub bub getting him cleaned up and everything else, the doctor said, ok another push we have to get the placenta out - and I pushed and felt a slither and that was that. After squeezing out a baby, the placenta is nothing!

mine detached while i was in labor so when i pushed olive out, it came out at the same time. so i didn't feel it at all!

I had to have a d&c to get my placenta out. I was already in the or as a just in case so they upped my epidural and I took a nice little nap. I remember that it was really uncomfortable when they were trying to get it out before deciding to do the d&c.

I know they tugged on it a bit but i didnt feel anything or know when it actually came out. DH looked at it (why!?) and said it was creepy.

My epidural had worn off by then, I still didn't feel it. A few small pushes and it was right out. I was not into the baby at that point, just major relief that he was out. Soon after I was busy joking around with the doctors while they cleaned the baby up. I did look at it after, to me it was pretty cool!

Immediately after a baby comes out, the placenta coming out is (usually) barely even felt! I felt that way with both my epi birth and natural birth.
pomelo / 5469 posts
This is all very reassuring. Before TTC I didn't know/realise you had to deliver it (maybe I thought it just vanished lol) and have felt a little nervous since.

@Mummystar: that's exactly what my placenta delivery was like.
I know this is totally weird, but I remember it feeling kind of soothing down there.
