(Not in labor!)
My doctor's orders are to head straight to er if my water breaks or if my contractions are five min apart.
I've read a lot of bees call ahead... what did you do?

My doctor told me to call before going. Their office is closer to my house so they checked me there then sent me on my way. They also called the hospital for me so my room was ready when I got there.

I called. I didn't know if it was labor or not and didn't want to get to the hospital and be sent away. The OB on call said, "wait until you're in the worst pain of your life, then come in." :-\

@mediagirl: I actually called twice. The first time it was because I wasn't sure I was in labor and the nurse told me that I was able to talk just fine so I needed to wait.

I called my OB first. At 5 min apart, he still told me to stay home until I was really dying of pain. I think he just wanted a heads up at 5 min.

I called. I had contractions 3-4 minutes apart, but they weren't very painful so it didn't seem real. She told me I could go or stay. I went... and got sent home. Only to go back and hour later for real. I didn't call that time, It was so painful, I was getting meds no matter what my doctor said.

Eeeek! Thought you were in labor!
Yes - I called ahead, wanted to let the labor floor know I would be coming in - and I was glad I did. I called about 6/7pm and labored home until 2am and they had said they were waiting for me.

My instructions were to call my OB - then my OB called the hospital for me.

I called. The stupid doctor that I talked to (not mine) told me that I wasn't really in labor because I didn't have any contractions while we were on the phone. I, in fact, had 3 while we were on the phone. She also said that I probably peed on myself instead of my water breaking... um, no. I was a week overdue. There's a really good chance labor was real, lady.

I didn't call but I labored at home as long as possible and then went in. They called my OB after I was checked in.

I called the on-call midwives twice. The first time they told me to relax at home longer and wait, and the second time they told me to come in after hearing me have a contraction over the phone.

My friend had had her baby on Sunday. Her water broke in the morning and they called the hospital. She was told a similar thing to some of the ladies in here - you'll know it's time to come in because you'll be in terrible pain etc etc. Well, that pain never came! She waited at home, breathing through what she thought were mild contractions, until she felt the urge to push. They called the hospital again and were told they may as well come in. They kept her waiting in reception for ages, thinking she was still in early labour - but when they examined her she was 9cm!! An hour later she was pushing! There were women on the labour ward screaming all around her - and she actually asked the nurse "when do I start screaming?". The nurse said "they're nowhere near as far along as you - don't scream, just push!".
I think you may as well just turn up - it's not like they can tell anything over the phone!

I called at 510 after my water broke. The on-call OB (who is never met) said I sounded fine and because I was a first time mom things would move slow, and to come in around 10p. Good thing I didn't listen!
@Cherrybee: triage did the same to me! They assumed I was still only 3 cm & by the time I got a room I was 10 and she was almost crowning!

@sorrycharlie: Gasp!!!!
I guess the answer is, once you get into the 3rd trimester, start screaming and don't stop until the baby's here!!!!

My doctor told me to call her first and discuss things and then she would tell me which hospital to go to since she delivers at two hospitals.
I ended up being induced at a routine appointment so I never had to call her

No calls here, but I think things are different in Canada. My OB was in Florida with his family when she was born, I just got whoever the on duty doctor at the hospital was that day.

I called ahead because I wasn't sure if they would have room for me or not. At the time I called, I was just having some contractions that were more like period cramps, but they were 5 min apart, 1 min long and had been going on for an hour. They told me to wait. About 5 min after I called, my water broke, so we went in anyway

My water broke and I called L&D. That's what they told me to do.

i called with both and they told me to come in. my water started leaking with charlie and my contractions were 5 minutes apart. the hospital also had one of their busiest nights ever, so they told me to come in because there could be a wait (and yes there was!) so definitely call!

My doc told me to just go in if my water breaks. But to call first if I'm going in because of contractions.

In our childbirth class they told us to call ahead in case they were understaffed and needed to bring in more nurses.

I didn't call, I just went in. I was miserable. I didn't care about being admitted I just wanted pain relief. I had terrible back labor. To make things better my Doctor was gone on vacation. When I arrived at the hospital they checked me and told me that there was nothing for they could do unless I progressed. I walked for 45 minutes and they admitted me.

I was told to call first. However, I probably won't get the opportunity as I'm being induced tomorrow! That 5:30 am appt is going to come fast!
