My mom says that pretty much every nursing mom she knew had to cut out caffeine because it irritated their LO in some way. I told her that I think it is a small group of moms who have to do it.
So, did you cut it out? Why?

Not really. I'm not a huge coffee person, but I love Diet Coke... I dont down a Big Gulp daily, but I'll have a can or two here and there. I also eat ridiculous amounts of chocolate...

I did for a little while, but went back to drinking my normal amount (1-3 cokes a week). Tiredness won out.

Nope. I drank caffiene during pregnancy though so maybe that makes a difference?
pomelo / 5073 posts
Nope! I usually drink 2-4 cokes a week. Now, coffee affects her in a big way, so I don't drink that.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
No--I can't live without my coffee! I drink coffee every day and a diet coke 2-3 times a week. It doesn't seem to affect her. The LC at our hospital said it rarely affects babies and when it does it's when the mom drinks more than 300mg/day.

I cut it out for a week or so to see if it was causing her upset tummy issues but when I introduced it again there was no difference, so I have coffee every day. I have a little more than I did while pregnant.

No, I drink two cups of coffee a day, couldn't live without it! My ped said its not an issue (for my LO at least).
nectarine / 2152 posts
I try to only have 1-2 a week bc I worry it will keep mine awake, LOL...
persimmon / 1165 posts
No, it never seemed to affect my LOs. But I did limit my caffeine intake.
pomegranate / 3779 posts
I try to limit it in the evenings, but it really doesn't seem to have an effect on LO.
pomegranate / 3768 posts
Nope, I neeeeed coffee more than ever now! I just limit to one full cup a day.

I did with Ellie because she was sensitive. My favorite root beer is one of the only ones with caffiene-- I hadn't had it all pregnancy, and the first time I had it after she was born she went from being high needs fussy baby to complete demon baby. It took drinking a caffinated beverage twice before I made the connection, and so I was caffiene-free until she was an older toddler (around age three) and it didn't really bother her.
Lorelei was not sensitive at all, so I drank small amounts of caffiene in tea, coffee (rare), or pop (rarer) whenever I felt like it.
I think it mostly depends on the baby, and you can use your best judgment

I did completely. My LO had terrible painful gas that made her cry and she had to be nursed through. Plus she was naturally hyper. Newborns do have a hard time metabolizing caffeine and I didn't want to risk additional upset or activity. I also (this following thought is less rational/ not proven) did not want to risk stunting her growth... as I said this last one... that's just me!/ my own thing/ idea. The others you can find info about on kellymom.

No I still drink a big mug of coffee in morning and a couple cokes a week. I don't have caffein late in the day though because it keeps me awake.
pomegranate / 3872 posts
Nope, and I eliminated all caffeine during pregnancy! I waited a few months and tried black tea. It didn't bother her so I graduated to coffee. I only drink one cup a day and she isn't bothered.

@lawbee11: I heard it gives babies gas? Or was your LC referring to it affecting their sleep?
eggplant / 11287 posts
@whodat: I wish I could do that! I am a coffee fiend. My LO is colicky though, so I dot want to drink much caffeine until I figure out what's bothering her.
It doesn't help she wakes ups every 2 hours at night! So tired.....
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
Nope. I drink 1-2 cups of coffee a day, and there are definitely days where I've also had a tea, extra cup of coffee, or soda in the afternoon. Haven't noticed any impact on LO. I didn't drink it during the first trimester, but had maybe 5 cups a week after that.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Have you tried cutting out cow's milk products? That can sometimes help.
bananas / 9118 posts
Nope, no need to for us! I don't know how I would have survived without some caffeine in those early weeks!
pineapple / 12053 posts
nope. it never bothered her and i drink coffee every morning, sometimes while nursing her!

I haven't yet. DD is 4.5 weeks old and seems to be okay with it. I usually make a cup or two in the morning, but sometimes I don't have a chance to finish it depending on what DD is up to!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@Rainbow Sprinkles: I think she was referring to affecting sleep and just general fussiness. She said very rarely does a mother's diet have any impact on the baby and that often times women mistake just general newborn fussiness for something in her milk causing it.

Yes, I pretty much cut all caffeine out in the beginning. After the 4m regression I brought decaf back and that's still all I drink. I never drink espresso or lattes with full caffeine.
TBH M's sleep and fussiness was so bad I was willing to cut everything out to help her. You never know if it'll help YOUR baby if you don't try.
persimmon / 1101 posts
No way! I was fine doing caffeine free while pregnant, but there's no chance that I could survive now without one cup a day!
nectarine / 2973 posts
I did in the beginning but started drinking tea again around 5 months and it didnt seem to bother her at all so now I don't worry about it.
apricot / 344 posts
I haven't ever cut out caffeine. On average I am a one cup of coffee a day though, so nothing too crazy.
pear / 1879 posts
No, I drank 1 serving of caffeine (either small coffee or tea) during pregnancy and just kept doing the same after LO was born. A few months in, I upped my caffeine intake (we had/have a non-sleeper!) and somedays have a coffee and a Diet Coke now. I didn't see any difference in the way he slept when I drank a bit more, and it did not seem to bother him at all, so I was comfortable with what I was taking in.
nectarine / 2054 posts
Definitely not, I really didn't (and don't) limit coffee at all while nursing! It hasn't affected LO. I'm a coffee fiend. And I actually didn't drink any caffeinated coffee while pregnant, only decaf once a day.
pear / 1823 posts
I cut it out completely while pregnant and avoided it for the first month or two. Then I started having 1 or 2 caffeinated beverages a week. When that didn't seem to bother him, I upped it to one a day. That's where I'm currently at and I'm going to try to stay here even after he's weaned
