I've heard people say this is a common thing that happens before labor that you either get diarrhea or empty out your bowels completely before going into labor. Was this true for you?

You know.. I don't think it was diarrhea (water) but it was definitely looser. I labored on the toilet at home and at the hospital.
So relieved I got to empty my bowels at home! Was afraid of pooping while I pushed!

Yeah. When I first work u with contractions I had that as well as the bloody mucous when I peed. I did not poop when I pushed, though. So I was happy for that. haha.

I guess thats the body's way of preparing for labor... and it also reduces your chances of pooping while pushing, although for some reason I'm really not bothered if I poop while pushing.

I'll be stunned if I don't have diarrhoea in the early stages, to be honest. It's my body's default reaction to high stress situations. I'm fairly sure labour qualifies!

@aunt pol: mine too! I was so sick when I bought my first house, I thought we were going to miss my closing time b/c I was stuck in a McDonald's bathroom! Then there was the flight to England I almost missed, the first day of school, work, etc. Ugh. I never put those together before. I am so in trouble when it comes to labor....

I think it has to do with the increase in prostaglandins in early labor. Anyway, yes this happened with me... I went 4 times before feeling contractions with my first baby. After the 3rd and 4th times, I was like... Man, something's gotta be up! Pregnant people don't poo this much in one day normally, haha. With my second, I went just once and then progressed to a very fast labor afterwards.

I didn't have diarrhea, but I pooped right before contractions started coming with both kids. Labor was fast both times so when I pooped with olives pregnancy,, that's what convinced me it was labor even though it was a month early!

Didn't have diarrhea... I pooped during labor (not while pushing) but I didn't know until way after. I was numb from the epidural at the time and the nurse cleaned me up and whisked it away before I even noticed. Wagon Sr. informed me later when I started worrying about pooping while pushing

@mrs. wagon: aw. That was so sweet of him to tell you that. :-\ Seriously, though. It should be a rule like fight club, you do not talk about poo!

yeah... it was awful, my butt was SO RAW from about 4 days of intense diarrhea. I was in so much pain. I was also nauseous, it was like the first trimester all over again.

@mediagirl: lol! He knows me though.... I always want to know. Even about poo.

Nope, no diarrhea. I'm not afraid to admit that I pooped on the table. Several times. My labor went very fast, so I'm not sure if that had something to do with it.
I did throw up like crazy at 7-8 cm though.

Yep, it worked well. And in all 3 births I didn't poop on the doctor. I was all emptied out.

Nope. But I don't think I would have minded it- it was days before I poo'd again after giving birth, I was terrified!

@aprk: are you having contractions/bloody show/pelvic pressure, or just diarrhea/soft stools?
squash / 13199 posts
@aprk: I dont think that diarrhea on its own is a sign of labor. Unless you are having other labor symptoms?

@tororojo: @Mrsbells: not really. I wasn't nervous until I started googling, lol. It's been two days so maybe I just have a weird bug or something.

I thought I had diarrhea but actually was in labor. My husband mentioned some labor pooping happened long after our LO arrived.

@aprk: I don't think poop problems alone are indicative of labor. But if you have diarrhea long-term I would check with a doc--you need nutrients and might not be absorbing any.

With #1: nope. Constipated all the way till delivery. Fun!
With #2: the week prior I had lots of BMs but then got constipated again and stayed that way till delivery.
