How common is it? I've read 10%, 20%, etc.
I only pumped (and not even that consistently) for the first six weeks or so and never got it. Wondering what to expect if I bf for real with #2.

I BF for 14 months and never got it. I did get a couple of plugged ducts but that's it.

I breastfed for 18 months and suspected that I had clogged ducts twice (not sure though, just had what felt like a bruise but couldn't feel anything) and never got mastitis. I was also pretty aggressive with unclogging techniques though.

DD1 - BF for 14 and never got it.
DD2 - had to stop my milk supply and didn't get it then either

Yup I got it when DD was about 2 weeks. It was awful but I managed to get through it without antibiotics.

Never with DD (and I quit BF at 10 weeks pretty much cold turkey - so I'm surprised I didn't get it).
I'm BF DS right now (16 weeks) and I've had 2 plugged ducts but no mastitis.
and now I'm worried I'm jinxing myself

Yes, I was an EPer and got it around 5 weeks. It was awful. I got so sick so fast, but luckily once I started the antibiotics it went away very quickly on its own

@Meowkers: Do you have an idea of what caused it? Or did it come out of nowhere?
@lovehoneybee: @lawbee11: @Turd Ferguson: @danda: @sandy: @MrsF: That's great that you were able to avoid it! Is there anything you actively did to prevent it?

@2littlepumpkins: I didn't do anything to prevent it but it probably helped that my LO didn't STTN til she was a year old so I never got all that engorged. Silver lining?

Once when dd was about 6 weeks. It was awful and came on so fast but once I got antibiotics it cleared up quickly

I've breastfed three babies (my oldest for a year, my middle for three months, and my youngest is still going strong at 15 months) and I have only gotten it once with my middle child,

@2littlepumpkins: I was very agressive in trying to treat the plugged ducts once I had them (heat on the affected area before nursing or pumping and massage during and trying to empty that breast frequently).
I guess the only other thing I do is lots of massage while I'm pumping. Mostly that's just to get more milk out, but i think it probably helps to empty things fully too.

DS 1 - never
DD 2 - twice. First time at less than 2 weeks old and second time at 3.5 months old. Not fun. Both times it came on very suddenly and it was severe so had to have antibiotics.

No. I bf and pumped for 2 mo and then EPed for another 2. Got a few plugged ducts (esp during weaning) but no mastitis luckily.

No. BF/pumped for 12 months, still BFing now at almost 18 months. I got several clogged ducts in the first few months but managed to clear them up quickly each time.

@2littlepumpkins: When I thought I had a clogged duct I made sure to nurse a ton and pump from that breast, in addition to massaging the area which hurt (massaging an area that hurts is painful!). In general it helps to avoid being too engorged for too long...so when my daughter started sleeping through the night at 11 weeks from maybe 7 pm - 7 am, for a while I was waking up in the middle of the night to pump (due to pain but it probably helped prevent issues) and then eventually started pumping last thing before bed (when I'd still get about 4-5 ounces). If I nursed my daughter in the morning and she only took one breast so the other still felt very full/uncomfortable, I also pumped that one. Note: I definitely had some oversupply at that point and the pumping only encouraged the oversupply, but I was ok with some slight oversupply as I wanted to build up a freezer stash for when I went back to work and occasionally had business travel. Oversupply can help cause mastitis, discomfort, and leakage and potentially cause an upset tummy in baby, so it's not something you necessarily want to encourage.

Yes, once at 3 months PP and once at 13 months PP. Had to take antibiotics both times. The second time was the worst. I could barely move for a day and was vomiting every time I sat up.

@2littlepumpkins: yes it came out of nowhere at 12 months pp. It was awful and I had to do antibiotics. Dont know what I could have done to prevent it. Lo wasnt sttn at that age either so no engorgment

Never got it with DD. With DS I got it at about 2 months. Started out as a clogged duct that I couldn't get to drain. Then turned red and swelled. Had to have antibiotics. I was told to keep nursing on that breast. I cried every time!

Yes, with both LOs right around 6 weeks. I am prone to oversupply, though, so it's not that surprising. In both cases it was when they started lengthening their night sleep (not to anything luxurious, just 4 hours!) I treated with a lot of heat, massage, and pumping when I was really desperate to empty (didn't want to make the oversupply worse). It's awful.

Yes. OMG. I had breastfeeding issues - in fact I never saw a drop of actual milk (some colostrum and a fair bit of pus) - and I think my mastitis was caused by infection entering via the open, bleeding sores I called nipples.

Yes I had it at 5-6 weeks post partum with my first. Needed ABX.

Yes I had it at four weeks postpartum. I was using a nipple shield because he was having lunch issues in the shield doesn't let you fully get drained, so I got a blocked duct that turned into mastitis very quickly. I went to sleep feeling fine and woke up in the morning with 103 fever and red streaks all over my breast.

I had low supply, which might have been my saving grace. I had a clogged duct, but I was able to resolve it. No mastitis.

I had it at one week postpartum and needed antibiotics. I went to sleep and felt fine and woke up a few hours later with a 102 fever, the chills, and a red streak on my breast. I think it was partially because I had a serious oversupply at first and we were still in the sleepy newborn phase, and I didn't notice the pain at first because I was still on painkillers from my delivery (broken tailbone = 3 weeks of vicodin). I'm still nursing now at 6.5 months out and haven't had any problems since - no clogged ducts or anything (knock on wood!!)
