When you were in the hospital for your child's birth and recovery, did you give your nurses a gift? If so, what?

I don't think I will unless someone brings us goodies (cupcakes, cookies, etc.) I'll offer some to whichever nurse comes in. But I plan to kill them with kindness and be the most polite, thankful patient they'll have, lol!
not that that was very helpful, since you asked for what people had *already* done..but, I'm bored.

We brought baked goods. Everyone loves some baked goods!

No but when I was being stitched up I told everyone in the room I wanted to adopt them bc everyone was so great. Everyone on the delivery team kept telling me how awesome I was for going natural and that made me feel like a rockstar haha. I really did want to adopt them all

Nope - didn't even occur to me. I really liked one of my recovery nurses though. My l and d nurse was nice but I wasn't floored by her.

I felt like I should have with all of my l&d nurses. They were incredible. One of them that was transferred to recovery in the middle of her shift came back to visit me after her shift to see how I was doing.
@chopsuey119: I hope you get the nurses that I had!

@marriedandlovingit: I loved all my nurses minus one! She was older and so annoying!

Kind of we had all our care at a birth center, so I knew all the midwives/nurses pretty well by the end of the 9 months. However I was transferred to a hospital last minute for some complications, so the hospital nurses became my nurses - but I didn't get them anything (not knowing I'd be at the hospital, obviously).
But I did make a bunch of healthy treats and wrapped them pretty with recipe cards and gave them to all my nurses and midwives at the birth center.

@chopsuey119: The nurses in recovery weren't my favorite. I liked one, but the rest truly sucked.

@sorrycharlie: I can appreciate that. I answer what did you do questions with what I expect to do all the time.

I brought cookies! Well, I had cookies made and shared them with my nurses, techs and anyone else who came in my hospital room!! My sister in law was my labor and delivery nurse, so I probably had special treatment there, but I was certainly glad I had them for my post partum/mother baby nurses and techs. I'm not sure if they just don't get as much "love" as the L&D nurses, but they seemed very appreciative of the gesture! (and I never had to wait for anything-which is amazing considering the hospital I delivered at births 19,000 babies a year)

Since LO was born on DH's birthday, I had my mom bring some chocolates for the nurses (and cupcakes for DH). Of course, I forgot to give it to the nurses until the second night we were there - so they got it at 2am when a nurse came in to check vitals

It totally never crossed my mind but thankfully my MIL brought a nice box of chocolates and a thank you card for us to leave for them.

Sounds like such a great idea, but at the same time, am I really going to be thinking about baked good when I go into labor? Maybe it's a job to put my mom in charge of.
Do nurses appreciate baked goods/sweets, or do you think they'd prefer healthy stuff, flowers, something else?
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
I didn't. I guess there was a lot on my mind so I forgot....

Nurses definately love treats! It makes our shift:) I didn't with my DD, but I think I will try to make something while we are at home. It really is nice to get a treat.

@Mrs. Tricycle: I'm not an L&D nurse, but I always loved getting goodies from patients!... though I try to be healthier, so my favorites were Edible Arrangements.
I'm going to bring some baked goods, if I can remember!

We planned on bringing freshly bakes cookies. Ha! Once I started having contractions, that plan went straight out the window. In fact, DD is now 2 months old, and I still have the ingredients for the cookies sitting in my kitchen cabinet. I did write nice thank you notes to each of my L&D nurses though. They were amazing!

I wasn't about to worry about it during labor. But I absolutely loved all of our nurses!
At the 1 month pediatrician appointment I brought him by the hospital since it is across the street from my pediatrician. I put a little photo of him and a thank you note on a few containers of brownies from the bakery and dropped them off to l&d, recovery, & nicu.
We stopped by and visited with the nurses so they could see how big and not yellow he had gotten. They all seemed so shocked to get the treats, but they definitely deserved them!

Maybe I'll make myself a note to bake some cookies or cupcakes before my due date and freeze them and then I'll just have the DH take out of freezer and bring them to the hospital.

We did. I think it's pretty customary here in Japan. We gave a gourmet cookies that came in a wrapped box to the nurses, another box of treats to the doctors/interns, and some chocolates to my own doctor. I've never given so many presents until I moved to Japan.

I think it's a great idea! I think I'll bring treats to the midwives and doulas at the birth center.

I gifted my midwives and the nurse that took care of me the first two days a small lotion/handsoap set from The Body Shop. No calories!
I didn't have the energy to make something homemade, and honestly, I wouldn't eat something from people I don't know, so I would think the delivery staff would probably not eat it anyway. The only food I would give is something premade and prewrapped, with ingredients listed. Otherwise, it's cash in the trash.

@mynoahbear: we have some Japanese customers and I feel the same way! I feel like we're always gifting back and forth and back and forth. It's pretty amusing.

I ordered a big cookie/treat basket to be delivered to the nurses station while I was there. It was the week before Christmas and the nurses were wonderful.

DH brought in coffee for all the nurses one morning. his mom is a nurse and she has often said that its nice when patients bring in coffee for them, makes them feel appreciated.

I never even thought about it, maybe I will have my mom bring some cookies in and whenever someone comes in my room I will offer them a treat!

I made a huge basket of food items for the nurses. It included granola bars, trail mix, fruit chews, dried fruit, crackers, and cookies. So there was a mix of healthy and no so healthy snacks they could easily grab. We had so many thank yous and the nurses really seemed to appreciate it,

We sent flowers & treats to the OB office & L&D after we left the hospital

We won't be doing a gift. Not to sound like a jerk but they get paid (well!) to do what they do.. I'm grateful (and especially grateful that we have a good insurance plan) but I don't think a gift is necessary, maybe a thank you card if anything.

I totally forgot because my labor was unexpected. I'll definitely bring treats to the NICU nurses when my son is released, they've been amazing!!
honeydew / 7667 posts
I think it sounds like a really nice idea but not sure if I'm planner enough to make something like that happen.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@krsmall: do you have an eta on his release date yet?
If I end up being induced, I'll probably take some cookies in with me. I'm not sure how they'll feel about baked goods from strangers but, I have a bunch of frozen cookie dough balls and I have two days off from work next week so, I'll do it as a nice gesture.

@mediagirl: I actually received great news today! It looks like our son will be home Wednesday at the latest!!!

I loved my L&D nurses/doctor so much. They were my support when I was delivering and were so kind and sweet.
I had my husband take them a tray of (bought!) muffins and bagels a few days after we brought my LO home. He had to go by the hospital go get something anyway so I had him leave the tray and a few thank you cards.
