My one thing on my birth plan. This is a non-negotiable for me.
But always worry that it may not happen if I end up needing a c-section, etc.

Nope. I wanted it but he came out before the doctor got there. Then when I did get him I only had a few seconds with him before giving him to dad because I was gonna pass out. It was hours before I got him back.

I had a c-section and did not have immediate skin to skin. It was within the hour though. Once I was put back together I went to recovery where DH and baby were waiting for me. The nurse did immediate skin to skin for us at that time.

Yes, but I didn't have a C-section. My hospital's policy is they give you the baby right after they do the initial APGAR scoring. If it's 8 or higher, you get the baby and they come back in an hour for more tests.

I wanted it too, but it wasn't possible. Our LO wasn't breathing so we didn't even get to see her. I got to hold her in NICU for a while, but then she quit breathing again and no one was allowed to hold her anymore

Yes I did, but I didn't have a C-Section and my deliveries were (thankfully) uncomplicated. I also got to breastfeed within the hour for both kids. But if there was any complication, I would rather have the doctors check the baby out than worry about whether or not I had immediate skin to skin contact.

No, I had a c- section so I only got to see her for a second before they took her away to check.

I had a c-section and didn't get immediate skin to skin until I went not the recovery room about 20 minutes later. My DH was able to do skin to skin after they did the standard measurements and checks.

I was so lucky and able to do this. That was the one thing I wanted, and told the nurse as long as the baby is healthy I want skin to skin. They told me they might have to take her because during delivery they saw that she had poo'd, but luckily it was no big deal.

I did- the hospital I delivered at is "baby friendly" and it's part of their normal routine. We also had a one hour "babymoon" to bond with LO after she was born (they kicked everyone out of the room except for my hubs).

Yes, I did. The hospital I gave birth in is a huge fan of it and I loved it.

I didn't, but we did later! I always thought I wanted it, but m turned out happy and healthy so I don't feel bad about not having immediate skin to skin.

Nope. She wasn't breathing when she came out so they had to take her immediately.

I wanted to and the hospital pushes it but there was meconium in my water so I couldn't. I think I got her after about five minutes, though.

No, her cord was wrapped around her neck twice so the NICU department had to check her out first.

I had a c-section, so it wasnt "immediate" but I had skin to skin within the first hour. They may have let me do it immediately but I was violently throwing up from an allergic reaction to something, so DH had to hold her.

I had a c-section, and LO had ingested some liquid, so they took her immediately just to get the liquid out, and then gave her to me for skin to skin while they stitched (well, stapled) me up. I think they would have given her to me immediately if not for the liquid situation. Then we - me, DH and LO - went together to my room where we got over an hour alone together (no visitors allowed).

i wanted it but due to c-section I didnt get to have skin to skin time at all. yet another reason why I hate c-sections.

They put DS on my chest as soon as he was out. I think I had 15 or 20 minutes with him on my chest before I had to pass him to a nurse while I got stitched up. I needed an episiotomy to get him out, and the stitches were so painful. I was afraid I was going to drop him. I got him back the moment the stitches were done.

I had a C-section so I had it within the hour! It was still magical!

Yup! You have to make sure your attending nurse knows it and your husband too. After delivery you might be too groggy and euphoric to remember to ask.
My hospital is really for skin to skin right after delivery so it's the first thing they did. Before cleaning, before suctioning. LO came to me first before all else.
It IS possible to have skin to skin right after a c section. You just have to really push for it.

Yes! I forgot to tell them beforehand, but my midwife asked me immediately, I said yes, and he immediately went on my chest. It was pretty special!!

Yes. In fact, LO was with us the whole time - she never left our room! I was really surprised because I expected to only have 2 hrs with her but she just stayed in the room with us the whole time. Aside from clearing her mouth, I had skin to skin right away. LO's really fussy so she was actually kicking my stomach while she was on me and I hadn't delivered the placenta yet - it hurt!
She also stayed up for hours without sleeping and it's a little overwhelming for a new mom that's JUST delivered and hadn't had sleep (+ sick with the cold). But aside from that, it was pretty wonderful to spend so much time with her immediately after.

Kindof.
As soon as he came out the nurses put him onto a little tray or something beside me and did some checks on him or something. He peed on them. Ha! And they held his little face up for me to see. They weighed him and things like that, I think, while I got stitched up. It was all in my room. Then they put him on me and I did skin-to-skin for about the next 8 hours straight (slept with him on me).

My hospital's policy is immediate skin to skin contact for at least an hour. Even with a c-section. If mom is having trouble and can't do the skin-to-skin, they do it with dad.
