He gets 12 weeks paid at a pretty awesome percentage, maybe 80%? I can't recall.
pineapple / 12526 posts
DH got 10 days, which ended up being more because they credited him the week and a half I was in the hospital. He got more like 3 weeks.
nectarine / 2784 posts
He could take unpaid paternity leave if he wanted (i can't remember how much) but he's just going to use PTO instead.
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
FMLA would apply but would be unpaid. DH can use his PTO during that time though. He took 1 full week and 2 weeks of half days last time. This time he will probably do the same.
coconut / 8472 posts
DH gets nothing with his current job. He just interviewed this week and got an offer for a company that pays 4 weeks parental leave. We plan on having one more child, so that would come in handy.

@LindsayInNY: does it matter if it's sick vs. vacation time? He can do either, and I assumed he'd take vacation.
bananas / 9229 posts
@dc yoga bee: I don't think so. Some companies put it all in one bank of time off - vacation, sick, personal, etc. He's been using sick time for doctor's appointments this year since we're rarely sick enough to be out of work. So if he doesn't do that he won't really use his sick days. I have a bunch at work as it is that I'll lose.
watermelon / 14467 posts
He took a combination of sick/vacation time for the first two weeks.
pineapple / 12566 posts
For Lo1, 10 working days paid and he took off an extra week of vacation time. For LO2 he had one full month paid. But he was not working for US companies either time.
nectarine / 2641 posts
Nope. He'll get however long he wants (up to 6 weeks) unpaid, and we'll probably use a combination of sick/vacation to get him about 2 weeks off.
Although we're really hoping he'll start a new job before then, and he may not end up with any time off at all (paid or unpaid). But I've got my parents around to help.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
My husband is getting a sweetheart deal. He can take as much time as he wants as long as he completes some predetermined projects. Full pay for up to six weeks. I can't even pull a deal that good and I'm the one going on maternity leave!
pomegranate / 3604 posts
We can split up to 35 weeks between us out of 52 in any way we want to. 5 of those weeks are at 70% of pay; the rest at 55%.
I don't know if it'll work out that hell get to take any. He did take a week vacation (paid) when LO was born.
blogger / coconut / 8306 posts
DH gets 6 weeks vacation/sick time to use each year. It isn't considered paternity leave, because he had to dip into his vaca/sick days but he took three weeks off with both kids.
He works for the federal govt and I was surprised to learn that they don't have paternity leave (but we don't complain bc his vacation time is incredible).

Will your DH be through the one-year waiting period by the time you're due?
My DH gets a month at full pay, and he can take as much of his regular vacation as he wants (he accrues 4 weeks per year). So in theory he could peace out of there for two solid months at full pay. That's a lot better than I'm getting, and I'm the one having the baby.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@MrsKoala: to be clear, my husband has to take pto first.
bananas / 9229 posts
@PawPrints: Nope. He just started there in September. Funny, they sent all sorts of benefit info over ahead of time but there was NO mention of maternity/paternity/parental leave AT ALL. And no one on his team has had a baby in recent years either.
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
My husband's company officially offers 2 weeks paid to the "secondary caregiver" and 8 weeks paid to the "primary caregiver." He took 3 weeks off and they didn't ever end up deducting the 3rd week from his vacation. His company is really great about that stuff. His boss came back part-time for 2 months after maternity leave at full salary.

@LindsayInNY: I haven't read all the responses, so maybe someone mentioned this, but is your husband eligible for the nj family bonding leave? I think that's only a five month waiting period. Here's a link http://www.njtimetocare.com/our-agenda/family-leave-insurance
bananas / 9229 posts
@Mama Bird: That's what I've been trying to look into (no one mentioned it). From what I read, it sounds like there is a 12 month requirement with your employer but what stinks is that by working in NJ, he pays into it. And his former employer was NJ based too so he's been paying into it for 3+ years now. I don't think us living in NY makes a difference either. But this part seems to address what you said, I think?: "A claimant must have had at least 20 calendar weeks in covered New Jersey employment in which he/she earned $145 or more (called "base weeks"), or have earned $7,300 or more in such employment during the "Base Year" period." He would definitely qualify for that then. He started in September and I'm due in June. I don't know if he could double dip vacation time with this because it only pays a max of $600 per week. But I'm trying to look into it more! His HR may be NY-based and not know?
pomegranate / 3127 posts
@LindsayInNY: it's possible they don't know because they're in NY! I only know because a coworker lives in nj. He's not eligible as he works in NYC, but I think his wife took the extra leave.
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
No, he had to use PTO to cover the 2 weeks he took off work.
pomelo / 5678 posts
I don't think so. A waiting period makes sense- I had a waiting period of one year for my unpaid maternity leave at my previous employer, so it makes sense that the same would go for men (? maybe?)
DH might at his new work place but I am unsure. He gets to save up to 8 days of paid vacation for the following year, so we might save a few extra days just in case. Where he was working when we had LO he took 5 days paid, it was either vacation or sick leave, I can't recall.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
No. He can use FMLA, but that's unpaid. For both Xander and Logan, he just used his PTO to stay home with us for 4 weeks.
pomelo / 5041 posts
Nope. DH could use FMLA to be home with us unpaid but he typically just uses PTO. Last baby, he had just started a new job so he only took off 4 days! With twins coming I'm banking on two weeks.
eggplant / 11861 posts
DH totoo FMLA and it is 100% of his checks because of all his aquired sick leave! So he will bw off for 6 weeks with me
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
It sucks that he won't make the waiting period but that same rule applies to a lot of ladies with maternity leave unfortunately. I think it's pretty amazing his employer offers paternity leave at all.
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
No. He was going to take vacation time. But 1 day into it, I made him go back to work because he was treating it like an actual vacation and wasn't helping me a bit.
persimmon / 1188 posts
No, he had to take vacation time. I want him to take more time if we have another child, even if it's unpaid I think it's worth saving up for. I wish his company was more generous.
papaya / 10343 posts
A whole two days. grumble. (he just used his vacation time, but even then he asked for 3 weeks and was told unless me or LO had serious health problems they would only approve 2. of HIS time. grumble).
nectarine / 2192 posts
@regberadaisy: exactly what I was thinking. We women often have waiting periods, so it makes sense it goes both ways. I don't know anyone around here with paid paternity leave, so it is awesome that they offer paternity leave at all.
honeydew / 7917 posts
There is no maternity or paternity leave available at my DH's company. He could only use vacation or 12 weeks of unpaid FMLA. He used a week of vacation for both kids.
clementine / 948 posts
Lol - no. My husband can barely take his vacation. He works at a hedge fund and people are intense there. Most of the men take 4-5 days off for paternity leave. But since they don't really use their 3 weeks of vacation, it is all sort of the same thing
honeydew / 7916 posts
@LindsayInNY: What we've learned with NJ is that there are a lot of family-friendly mandates (IF, paying for alternative formulas, hearing aids, parental leave) but they leave room for individual employers/insurers to decide their own policies. We were so bummed because of our situation living in NJ and not benefitting from any of the mandates. DH ended up using vacation time and was the first employee in his company to take more than a day off...apparently he set the example for others because a coworker in a similar position took a similar amount of vacation time a few weeks later.
pomelo / 5093 posts
Nothing specifically, but he can take his PTO. So, he'll probably take 2-3 weeks of that.
