What the question says...
DH just contacted his benefits department. He started there in June and works for the parent company of a huge HR/benefits company. He was told that he has to be an employee for one year to qualify for the 3 weeks of paid leave. I was shocked by this. He works in the NJ office for his company and I was fairly certain they (NJ) have mandatory paternity leave? I've never heard of a waiting period for dads.

He gets up to 6 weeks of leave time but it is unpaid.

At my husband's place of employmemt, certain level managers and above receive 6 weeks fully paid paternity leave. So he had 6 weeks paid.

He can get 6 weeks off paid I believe. He said he wouldn't take more than 2 though because it could hurt his career.

No, but we own our own company so we get no benefits like that. DH probably took about one week in hours off, but over the first month after LO was born (not counting our 2 days in the hospital).

He doesn't get paternity leave at all. He used a week of paid vacation time.

At his old job he supposedly has paternity leave paid, but taking it was really frowned on. His boss bragged about how after his son was born he was back at work that afternoon. I'm happy he doesn't work there anymore.
DH is taking the month off from his own company and will start back up in February. I'm really happy with how flexible he's being because he's usually a work a holic.

DH got 4 weeks of paid leave. He took 1.5 when DD was born and is taking the rest around Christmas.

He works at one of the largest non-profits in US and does not get any paid paternity leave. I need to remind him to ask can he can use STD as a dad for birth of a child

My husband gets one month paid without a waiting period; but most of my friends' spouses do not have paid leave.

I looked into NJ's benefits. If he were to qualify, it's a capped $600 per week (or 2/3 of salary) which is not much at all. Oh well, we'll manage!

He gets two weeks paid. He can take additional time but it is not fully paid. He took 4 weeks last time.

No, but he's a professor and I had LO two weeks before his semester started so he had two weeks paid off with me. It was just a (lucky!) coincidence.

He gets one week paid, he could take FMLA but that would be unpaid, and I'm already doing unpaid, so we are out of luck.
I was hoping he would take 2 weeks this time but he can't manage it. My mom is taking a week and my MIL is taking time off as well to help me recover from my C-section.

He did, but mostly only because he gets paid for 12 months while working 9-10 (university professor). I know had LO not been born in summer, he would have taken 12 weeks off during the school year, which would have been paid as well (for the same reason as above). The university offers 12 weeks of leave for both men and women for the birth of a child, but I don't think there is additional pay - not sure though.

Technically there is no such policy in place and he had just started a new job. But his boss was super awesome and gave him a week off paid.

@LindsayInNY: whaaatt!?! He gets 3 weeks annual and 3 weeks sick leave. If he can take 3 weeks paid leave from annual, I don't think it'll make sense for him to max out at $600 a week with std. His company pays for std, but unfortunately I didn't learn about std until I was 8 weeks pregnant

In ontario here... We can transfer some of our year to a spouse. His work tops up to 93% of pay for 5 weeks. So he took 5 weeks and was paid unemployment those weeks by the government. When he went back to work he was topped up by his employer. To get those 5 weeks I had to give them to him from the end of mine.

@dc yoga bee: I'm hoping DH can use some of his sick time instead of just vacation. The $600 week is kinda worthless to us. It doesn't make sense to get. STD would cover you post-birth but not him.

He's in sales so technically he doesn't get *any* legitimate time off - he can take off as much time as he wants and keep his base but if his sales numbers dip he's SOOL.

There was an interesting article in the NYT last month about paternity leave "Paternity leave the rewards and the remaining stigma".
My husband only gets PTO and FMLA, no additional time for paternity leave. He did take 2 months of unpaid leave/FMLA so he stayed at home for the first month I went back to work and we both were really happy with that. Would be nicer though if there were more companies offering paternity leave.

This post couldn't come at a better time! They sold DH on the job saying that they got paid paternity leave and turns out, there is no such policy. So he just spent a crap ton of on the phone with HR trying to figure out how much PTO he has left since only a few hours transfer over into 2015.
After a long discussion, he's taking a week off and after that, he'll start working from home 4x a week instead of 2. There is no reason for him to be in the office in the first place as he's the only developer in this remote office and his team is in NYC. All ended well I guess!
So sorry about your DH and dealing with the waiting period. That sucks.

This just reminded me that I want DH to look into his options at work. One of his co-workers is taking 2 months off for paternity leave but not sure how much of that is actually paid.

We are trying to determine what he's gonna be able to do right now! And my baby is due any day now.
His job is pretty flexible if he wants to take some unpaid days, but we haven't really figured out how many would be feasible (in terms of what his work would tolerate). The thing we want to figure out now is if he can use PFL, which is disability paid from state, and I think up to 6 weeks. The problem is, even though he is entitled to this, it is not job protection, and he isn't yet eligible for FMLA since he hasn't worked there 1 year yet. We think his work will let him take utilize the PFL for maybe 2-3 weeks, might as well, since god forbid he'll need to use disability for anything else.

In the UK dads get 2 weeks guaranteed paternity leave but whether its paid our not is up to the company. DJ's company pays one week and my DH took the second week unpaid.

His previous company gave him 4 weeks paid and up to an additional 8 weeks unpaid. Not sure what he'll get at his new company!
