I'm totally ignorant about this and my insurance is being a PITA about how to get a breast pump. 1 month til baby is due. I will be a SAHM and don't plan to have a freezer stash (or much of one, anyway) so I figured I would mainly try and pump into bottles to be used that day or shortly after. Does it make sense to buy a starter set of bottles now or will the kind I need depend on the type of pump we get? Can you pump into any ole bottle? Is there a universal brand of bottles that work well with any pump? Is this a dumb question? Please help.

my medela freestyle came with 4 bottles! the other bottles that we have don't fit into the pump membranes, but we use them for feeding!
you probably won't need to buy any pump bottles until you have the pump!

The standard Playtex Vent aire fit the Medela pumps. I would imagine other standard bottles do too but haven't checked.
I would buy bottles separately.

I have the Medela freestyle and all of the bottles that I have are interchangable. Some are from Medela, others are Gerber and someother brand.
@mrsjyw: Yours don't interchange? Hmmm...what brand do you have so I know which to avoid? I like being able to pump straight into a bottle.

@MaisyMay: I imagine she has the "natural" bottles with a wide mouth...they wouldn't fit.

@Mrs Green Grass: Oh, ok. I just know that anything I've tried with my Freestyle has worked and wanted to avoid getting some that don't. We wash enough bottles around here!

I've used both the Medela PISA and the Lansinoh Double Electric, both fit with any standard sized bottle. However both also came with at least 2 bottles so you could probably just use those to feed since you aren't planning on pumping or bottle feeding all the time.

I pump into Medela bottles, but LO takes a different kind. I just do a lot of transferring

I also have a Medela Freestyle and unless I am using one of the Medela bottles as a bottle for feeding, I use Dr. Brown's (with the wide mouth). I have extra Medela bottles for pumping, and don't mind that the Dr. Brown's bottles don't fit the pump.
ETA: I chose my pump after I chose bottles - I didn't view the 2 as related purchases.

I only pump into the bottles that came with my pump. I bought an extra set of pump parts and pump bottle. I also dont view the two as related purchases. I wouldnt let the pump influence my choice of bottle

agree with the others, my PISA came with 4 medela bottles, but the standard gerber or evenflo fit as well. i actually bought some extra evenflo nipples and rings for the medela bottles and they work!

I used the bottles that came with the pump and bought a box of storage bags, then I would transfer the milk. It took a few different bottles before we settle on one (Tommee Tippee) that he enjoyed.

@mrsjyw: FYI - I found that Tommee Tippee makes and adapter for the Medela pumps so you can pump directly in the bottle!
