I've need trying out pumping and bottles and am not having much luck. I breastfeed my 3.5 week old, but have been trying to have my husband give her a pumped bottle every once in a whole. I have both tommy tippee and Avnet slow flow bottles. Our daughter will have no problem drinking from the bottle, but she drinks it super fast, and then cries and roots until I breastfeed her. He tries to pace feed one once at a time, burping her in between. Tonight she took 3oz, and then he cuddled with her with a pacifier, but she cried and rooted on him until I breastfed her. We thought about giving her another ounce, but 4oz just seemed like too much for a 3 week old. We couldn't figure out if she was really still hungry, or just wanted comfort. Any suggestions?

I don't, but I hope others may have answers for you because we tried giving my LO a bottle at a week old and the same thing happened! She's 4wks now and we haven't really tried again since.

Sounds like she definitely could be looking for the comfort, breastfeeding releases all sorts of feel good hormones and in your arms at the breast is probably her favourite place to be
Maybe try offering a bottle at a different time of day?

4 oz sounds about like what my 4 week old would take from a bottle, but it's also entirely possible she just wants the warm, boob comfort!! maybe experiment and see if she's happy after 4 oz next time?

How fast is she drinking it? At that age, it should probably take her at least 15-20 minutes to drink that much. If she's drinking faster than that, she may not be realizing she's full!
But I agree that she could be looking for the boob for comfort. If you think she's really not hungry, try having him feed her a bottle when you're not around (or just lock yourself in a room until the whole thing is done) and see what happens. Maybe she knows Mom is around and so just wants snuggles/comfort from you!

My 4 week old has been taking 4 ounces for the past week...we use the avent slow flow and it takes her about 15-20 mins to drink it. I remember when she went from 3 ounces to 4 that it felt like a lot, but she is definitely growing (and sleeping through the night now!) sometimes she stops herself and doesn't drink it all but the majority of times she does

We gave LO her first bottle at four weeks, and at that time I think she needed a pacifier or some soothing after the bottle. If we thought she was still hungry we would offer a small amount more, another ounce or something.
I don't think this lasted long because I remember giving her a bottle sometime relatively soon after that and she didn't need to nurse, and now at 4.5 months she takes her bottles while I work full time with no problems. She's EBF and has pretty much always taken 3-3.5 ounces in her bottles, except if she's getting one at bedtime.
