I wait until it's either a real cry or she yells UMMA! Sometimes she'll go back to sleep after a few small whimpers.

Wait until it's a cry or a not sleeping "Momma" call. She talks herself to sleep a lot, so I just let her do it.

@autumnlove: usually if our oldest is sick and whimpering, he will call out for one of us... that's my cue to go in!!
Or, if his whimpering sounds really sad... I'll go in to check on him!

I'll wait until it's an actual cry, unless he's whimpering for more than 5-10 minutes (depending on how tired/lazy I am).

I check on the monitor. If he needs something or more upset, he's sitting or standing up. If he's just laying down whining, he'll generally just put himself back to sleep.

I also check on the monitor since we have a video monitor. If it looks like he definitely needs me, then I go in. Most of the time, he'll go back to sleep on his own.

It depends on the tone, if he sounds scared I'm right there, if he's just making noises, I'll wait.
He was wimpering this morning, but it escalated into a full terror crying... the printer came on, he is terrified of it. Usually if I can get there fast enough, I can calm him and pat him back to sleep- I wasn't fast enough today
