I haven't given him oranges this summer, but during the winter/spring i used to section each one and then cut a thin strip from the straight part of each section if that makes sense -- the toughest part to chew.

He was under a year old at the time, though! (~7-10 months) Earlier on I would also cut each section then into 3-4 stubby lumps, too.

I think at 13 months she is probably ok, but maybe depending on the clementine/mandarin/orange itself? yum!

I gave it to her with the peel, but would cut each slice in half at first. Now I give her the whole slice.

@mediagirl: We buy the sacks of "cuties" which are much easier to peel. She LOVES peeling the outside once I start it. Its great for fine motor development.

I would say that you shouldn't need to peel the inner skin, but making sure that all the stringy stuff is off is a big deal for me. My brother almost choked on that when he was a toddler. It got stuck half in his mouth, half down his throat.
