I'm currently tandem nursing my kiddies
I nurse DD 2-3x a day and DS gets boob or pumped milk all day.

I only have one LO right now but I would love to! I think it's so cool you are doing that!
honeydew / 7589 posts
I would, except I want to wait about four years for our next LO, so I probably won't. If I had them closer together, I totally would do that!

@anonysquire: True, but I'm only planning on BFing till 2 unless there's a medical need.

.@chopsuey119: Go you!
I am totally in the tandem nursing camp! Even if we were waiting a bit longer before ttc for our next, I plan to let P self wean (offering until age 2 and then letting her decide) so it's very likely I will get to be in the tandem nursing group!

@chopsuey119: WTG! I would love to try when the time comes, hopefully it works out. Do you find that you're a lot hungrier with two feeding?

So awesome! So does this mean your milk is "designed" for the new baby (more fatty or whatever it is that the newborn needs)? I've always been curious about this.

I'm hoping to be in this camp as I'm pregnant with #2 now and there's no sign of my daughter self-weaning. Do you have any advice for me about nursing throughout pregnancy and beyond?!
grapefruit / 4120 posts
Yep. My son weaned while I was pregnant but now he's back on the boob bandwagon and no signs of weaning again! Sometimes it seems like a bit much but it's my secret weapon for entertaining both of them at the same time when we're home alone!

@lolabee: not hungrier, but I'm thirsty all the time! Been drinking so much water.

Nope. I plan to wean LO at age 1 and I want her to be 3 when her little brother or sister arrives someday.

You're tandem nursing and HB-ing at the same time?? I'm impressed!
clementine / 959 posts
I'm 9 weeks pregnant with #2 and #1 is only 9 months, so I may end up tandem nursing. I'm just going to see how it goes.

I would love to, but I think DD is about done (at 18 months) and we aren't pregnant with #2 (hopefully soon).
pomegranate / 3983 posts
I think we will since LO is 19 months and still not totally weaned, and I'm due with baby brother next month.
@chopsuey119: @sloaneandpuffy: any advice? I'm thinking we are going to have jealousy issues, but should I not even be worried about it?
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@Baby Boy Mom: My DD wasn't very interested in her brother for the first few weeks of his life. She would want to hug and kiss him a few times a day but that was it. (kids are 21 months apart)
I think she started feeling a little jealous about a week ago. I just try to include her in whatever I'm doing, and if both kids need me at the same time I tend to my DD first. Today I was nursing my son and my daughter wanted boob at the same time, so I gave it to her. HA. It's challenging and I wanna scream sometimes (my new best friend is ice cream), but I just take one day at a time.

@anonysquire: bahaha I love your comment. I read this article in Mothering Magazine about how cultures are so different re: EBF! In Mongolia it's common for moms to breastfeed until mid-elementary age... and some even into teens! It's crazy but kinda cool in a way. I think our society skews our perception of it a lot I'll see if I can find the link!
ETA: looks like Mothering deleted their article for viewing... bummer but I found it here! http://www.drmomma.org/2009/07/breastfeeding-in-land-of-genghis-khan.html

I would love to if I can. I am worried my cycle won't come back until I stop bf though!! so it'll be interesting to see how that works out...

@Mrs. Pen: ok that article is so interesting!!! Thanks for posting it

@scg00387: I know right!! it's so cool I love learning about stuff like that.

@chopsuey119: That's what I'm thinking, that LO will want to nurse while I am messing with latching on a newborn. I guess I will have to play it by ear though.
honeydew / 7917 posts
You are awesome!!! I was never able to nurse my LO directly so I'm sure he wouldn't be interested if I am able to breast feed any future kiddos.
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
@Baby Boy Mom: I pump a lot and give my son bottles during the day and I nurse at night. Sometimes he'll need to be topped off with more milk so I nurse him.
It's been helpful since other people can feed him and he's not on me for hours during the day. Gives me flexibility and allows me to spend more time with my daughter
nectarine / 2217 posts
i think that is awesome too!
LO#1 and LO#2 (on their way) will be 15 months apart, so ideally that would be awesome... but unfortunately my supply was gone a few months ago already for LO#1 next time, maybe?
pomegranate / 3983 posts
@chopsuey119: That's a good idea with the pumping. The thing is that I'm scared to start too early with the bottles because LO had nipple confusion that took weeks to fix! Hopefully our bf journey starts off more easily this time around though.
grapefruit / 4120 posts
@Baby Boy Mom: We really didn't have jealousy issues but I think the nursing helps a lot with that. My son had weaned but when my babe was a couple weeks old he was having sort of a tantrum and I let him nurse and he's been hooked again ever since.
I guess I'd just say it's not as idyllic as it sounds! It can be tough to get comfortable if they're both nursing at the same time. But you'll figure it out. Like I said, it's a surefire way to entertain two kids at the same time!
pomegranate / 3983 posts
@sloaneandpuffy: Thanks, it actually doesn't sound idyllic (to me), but LO has just refused to give up the boob this whole pregnancy so I guess we're headed down this road one way or another. Here's to another adventure!
grapefruit / 4800 posts
I might have considered it if I got pregnant early after #1 but it seems I have to have LO weaned in order for my body to be pregnant. So I don't plan on stopping nursing her and then starting again.
nectarine / 2797 posts
That's awesome mama! I don't think I'll have mine close enough together to tandem nurse but if I did I would consider it.
