I tried to nurse part time, just morning and night when LO was 10 months old and it dried up.... I have heard of many having success doing this though. I was down to 1 pump a day and when I quit that it seemed to be the end for me....

I was able to nurse only in the morning and at night from 4-10 months and he got a mixture of BM and formula at daycare.

From months 4-8 I pumped at work but never got that much. I stopped pumping shortly after 8 months and was able to continue nursing at night but then DS went on a nursing strike and we never recovered. I think if I had gone back to pumping we might have but I just didn't have the energy.

Lots of people successfully nurse part time. What works for you and baby is best. Drop that 2 hour pumping session if it's no good for you mentally. Better to be a happy mama for you baby Any amount is a gift.

I think it is hard to predict your supply and your LO. But, I was able to bf morning and night only for 7 months after we day weaned at 13 months, so it is possible! It was like the best of both worlds--enjoying nursing without the pumping nonsense!

do you spend the whole two hours pumping? maybe pump for 15 minutes, then take a break, have a hot shower, pump again? or try and pump in the morning when your supply is greatest

Sometimes if you can pump one side while the baby nurses on the other you can get more.

Have you seen a lactation specialist to rule out tongue tie? How old is your lo?

I've known people who've had to supplement, and people who have pumped and eventually (3 months later) were able to produce enough. I know the pressure to breastfeed exclusively is so strong, and it makes moms feel unnecessarily bad about supplementing, but in the end all that matters is your lo is getting what they need, and any little bit of BM you can provide will still have fantastic benefits

I plan to part time nurse once I stop pumping at work. If nursing is enjoyable for you both, I would cut the pumping session and try to keep the one or two nursing sessions. You are doing a great job, mama!

Have you thought about renting a hospital pump? They're supposed to be much much more efficient at getting milk, and the rental might even be covered by your insurance.

How is she doing at 5 weeks? Gaining weight? Thriving? Have you tried feeding more often instead of pumping? I was told to pump after every feed the first week after she was born, so I decided to nurse every two hours instead for a week and see if that would be enough and it worked for us...

I have often thought about only nursing twice a day, but I know I would lose my supply, and LO wouldn't want to nurse at all then. Some babies comfort nurse even when there's hardly any milk though so you could do that! Have you looked into using an SNS? I wish I had explored that when LO was a newborn.

@MrsH: Supplemental nursing system. One brand name is the Lact-Aid. It allows you to supplement with a tube at the breast.
