Does anyone want to do a sugar-free challenge with me?

@Dagny: Yes! After lunch is awful for me - during LO's afternoon nap I just want to snack constantly!
@mamimami: No bread for me, but we eat pretty low-carb most of the time anyhow. I'm avoiding pasta, bread, baked goods. I'll eat quinoa, oats, and rice. Plus, I just can't seem to get away from my coffee creamer. I only use a little, and it honestly makes my whole morning.

@Dagny: I'm weak all the time! But my biggest danger zones are when I get home from work around 5 and then after I put the kids to bed around 8 AKA mindless munchie time.

I occasionally have cravings at breakfast, but my worst time is mid-afternoon (2-4 pm). I also find myself eating sweets after dinner, even if I'm not really craving them, because my DH likes to have dessert.

I'm on week two of my sugar-free phase, which is actually low-carb also. No fruits, breads, rice, pastas, etc. I do allow myself artificial sweeteners, though. I've done this a couple of times in the past for 30 days straight. It helps get my energy level up, lose the bloating and generally feel less "weighed" down, in addition to actually losing weight.

@mamimami: I'm doing the same as you. I had PB this am and then realized it had sugar, oh well the thought is there.

Yeah! Day one down! I'm ready to extend this one-day challenge to a two-day challenge! I accidentally ate like a drop of ketchup tonight but that was my only failing.

I'm on board. I'm normally not a huge sweets person (carbs and crunchy snacks are my pit-falls)--BUT Easter totally derailed me. Once I start and it's in the house I can't stop!!!

    I start tomorrow!

You girls are strong! Good luck! Ever since LO, I've had a major, major sweet tooth. I've got to work on it, but the end of the school year is NOT the time!

Day one down!! Today was easy for me but I assumed it wouldn't challenging until a few days in. I did eat a decent amount chocolate chia seed pudding in the afternoon! Ah, what is it about afternoon - it seems like that is a rough time for everybody.

@REDSMARTIES - omg, DH is obsessed with his coffee creamer! I'm trying to convince him to buy real cream instead, but I'm not sure he will go for it. Luckily I hate coffee.
@MAMIMAMI - yay!!! that's awesome. how was the evening for you?
@PURPLEPEONY - how long is your DH out of town?
@SUNSHINEANDSUSHI - i LOVE hearing this kind of thing. I have been feeling super bloated lately since I've been eating so many sweets and I'm really looking forward to feeling 'clean' again.
@JETSA - that would have skipped me up too! I checked the peanut butter I usually eat and it is just peanuts and palm fruit oil, but I decided to skip that and make some pecan butter instead.
@MRS. CORAL - fantastic, I'm so happy to have another participating!! I know how that goes - my mom left two bags of Easter candy at my house!! I was so mad. Let me know how day one goes.
    @MRS. J - thank you, thank you!

@Dagny: day one was okay, I did great until my kid was up twice before 9pm and then I had a Cadbury egg but still it was a million tomes better than I was so I call that a win.
Also big kudos to whoever was talking about pre-mixing oatmeal and just adding hot water at work. It works amazingly and now I can actually eat a decent breakfast I never have time to boil water at home and we have a hot water pitcher at work.

How's day 2 going, everyone? I did well on day 1 except that I might have technically cheated with a glass of wine -- I didn't think until I was several sips in about the fact that it has a high sugar content and I wasn't about to pour it out at that point. Day 2 is also going well, though I'm craving a pastry...but I'm staying strong! I had a banana instead this morning, but I have a feeling the afternoon cravings are going to be rough today.

@Dagny: my DH's trip is pretty short, he'll be back tomorrow evening. I told him before he left that I'm off sugar and he was like "oh, good idea! I'll join you" and then I said "you realize that means no goodies from [name of his favorite bakery]" and his face fell and he was like "ohhh...hmm..." So, we'll see!

@JETSA- ugh that sounds like a rough night of wake-ups! Definitely a win.

@PURPLEPEONY - I never would have thought about sugar in wine either. yeah it sounded good to DH to until he thought about all the things he couldn't have! it's unfortunate cause DH's work environment is terrible with junk food so it makes it really hard for him.. I hope your DH supports you as best he can!

Day two is already harder than day one for me too. I have already had a few pieces of chocolate-dipped tangerine slices I made last night (raw cacao powder + coconut oil). BTW everyone - tangerine slices covered in chocolate - best fruit to be dipped in chocolate hands down! And I can tell I'm just thinking about food more today!!

@Dagny: I started today and I am having sugar withdrawals! I want some gummi bears!

I had a banana today and that has been the only sweet thing....so far!

  14. Dagny

    apricot / 461 posts

@AUTUMNLOVE - wooo! I'm eating my chocolate chia pudding right now, haha. I feel like such a feign! Today has been rough. Do you have any other sweet items you can eat when you get a hankering??

  15. autumnlove

    hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts

    @Dagny: Blueberries and strawberries!

  16. Mrs. Oatmeal

    blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts

@autumnlove: berries are my go-to when I need a sugar boost. I hate that they are so expensive here! Can't wait for the summer when things are in season!

@Dagny: I used cream this morning and a bit if honey, I have to wean myself slowly. Nothing tastes the same as Cinnabon flavored creamer though. Sad.

Cheated last night, DH and I went out for our anniversary, and he insisted on sharing sticky toffee pudding for dessert. I only had two bites though. I read somewhere that a craving for sweets can usually be satisfied by one bite - so if you need ice cream, have one bite and then stop. Interesting theory, but easier said than done!

  17. PurplePeony

    pomegranate / 3113 posts

Still holding strong here...I was *thisclose* to caving last night but I managed to ignore the craving. I'm not sure how long I can keep this up, though!

  18. Dagny

    apricot / 461 posts

@REDSMARTIES - honestly, that is impressive that you only had that much on your anniversary! That would be incredibly hard for me. Kudos!

@PURPLEPEONY - nice! I've just started to become really weak at times. Today is my sister's birthday and I don't know what on earth I was thinking, but I took her to this amazing bakery down the street to let her pick out some pastries she wanted. It sucked.

I will say that I have been feeling pretty yucky. I don't know if it's because I have been over-doing it on my treats (which is very likely) or I am having sugar withdrawals but I have been feeling really bloated and have a little headache this afternoon. Hoping this goes away soon!

  19. Mrs. Oatmeal

    blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts

@Dagny: do you usually eat a lot of chia? I know that can cause stomach troubles if you're not used to it.

I've made it three days! I have eaten a few unhealthy carbs here and there but no added sugar! Woot! I feel less bloated.

Ok can I start this late???

  22. Dagny

    apricot / 461 posts

@REDSMARTIES - I do eat chia but not nearly as much as I've been eating the last few days. I had no idea it could be tough on the tummy! I'll stop eating that and see if it helps. I feel a but better, but I get the sense my body is doing some adjusting!

    Yeawooo @MAMIMAMI. I love it

@ANONYSQUIRE - yes! People are doing it for however long they are game, so I think there will be starting and stopping throughout the next month or so.

  23. Mrs. Oatmeal

    blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts

@Dagny: I wouldn't cut it out all together, but just introduce bigger amounts slowly. I had to start at 1 tsp and work my way up to more, because of the bloating and bathroom issues it caused
    .@anonysquire: welcome!

  24. Dagny

    apricot / 461 posts

@REDSMARTIES - Yeah, I've dramatically cut down on the chia seed and I'm already feeling better.

I'm feeling really good today. I've started to cut down on my emergency items (chocolate covered fruit, chocolate chia seed pudding) and am just eating more fruit when needed. This afternoon I did make a banana-pecan butter-chocolate smoothie and it REALLY hit the spot. How is everyone doing today?

Hey, I'd like to join this challenge- I'm just not sure how to do it. No bread, pasta rice and no sweets, Obvi. we eat pretty clean, but I dint think I'm always aware of random sugars I may be picking up in my diet. Does this also mean no artificial sweetener such as stevia or Splenda?or Juice? Or Wine? Is fruit okay?

  26. PurplePeony

    pomegranate / 3113 posts

@MrsMed: I think we're each making our own rules. For me, fruit is okay, I almost never drink juice so it's not really an issue, and I had a glass of wine one night without thinking. But artificial sweeteners are out because IMO they're worse for you than honey or real sugar. For me, the point of this is to break my addiction to sweet things, which isn't going to be accomplished by eating "fake" sweets. If I was going to do that, I'd just stick with the thing I was craving in the first place!

  27. Dagny

    apricot / 461 posts

Welcome @MRSMED! what @PURPLEPEONY said. We are all setting our own rules for the most part. For me, I'm not eating anything with sweeteners, no honey or maple syrup, just the natural sugars present in fruits and vegetables. Whatever your 'rules' are, I'd love for you to join for however long you'd like!

@PURPLEPEONY - it's funny because when you mentioned the accidental glass of wine earlier, I didn't think about the fact that beer wouldn't be allowed either. (I prefer beer.) that realization definitely bummed me out!!

I am feeling really proud because I've almost eliminated my emergency sweets and now I just go for a date, prune, or piece of fruit when I need something sweet. Yeawoo!

  28. mamimami

    grapefruit / 4120 posts

You guys! I did Monday-Friday (I did have one glass of wine and one beer but under my "rules" I thought it was OK), but I totally just accidentally fell off the wagon! There is a kind of coffee I only drink on weekends and it has sugar in it, and when my adorable baby woke up at 6 am I went into autopilot and put on a pot and started drinking it! Oh well. Might as well enjoy and then get back to my plan!

@MAMIMAMI - woo! That's awesome that you made it the whole week!

It's been a rough couple days. I have detox symptoms it's so weird but every time I've done a juice detox in the past I ALWAYS get a sore throat on the 5th day. So yesterday, it hit. And I didn't expect it (since I'm not doing a juice detox), but I realized it's probably pretty similar since I'm not eating anything processed. Weird! BUT otherwise I'm doing well, feeling strong and I'm ready for the next 24 days!

    How is everyone else doing?

@autumnlove: I'm always mean so I'm not noticing a difference haha. I've lost 3 pounds so I shouldn't even want to think about sugar. If anyone says its water weight though I will bite their face off!

Ok I am going to be TMI here. So I am at the end of day 3 of no sugar. I have been trying to eat more veggies and have been doing pretty well. Maybe too well. I have been having a stomach ache daily. Is this from the no sugar or the added veggies?

  36. tysonja

    nectarine / 2217 posts

hiya! I'm going to join -- I'll try for a week, because the week after is LO's second birthday and no promises there!

Also, shorter goals work for meeeee!

I'll try no added sugar and no sugar substitutes, and less carbs, whatever that means. haha

  37. Dagny

@ANONYSQUIRE and @AUTUMNLOVE - I totally have to have chocolate. or else I am a monster. My go to chocolate fix right now is a smoothie with banana, some kind of nut butter, ice cubes, and cacao powder.

@ANONYSQUIRE - I think it must be from the added veggies. all that extra fiber can definitely mean some stomach adjustments.. Has it improved at all in the last couple days?

@REDSMARTIES - weekends are the worst! And not to mention it was mother's day. We went to a mother's day brunch on Saturday and my SIL and MIL ordered a few desserts for the table. Surprisingly it wasn't too hard to not have any, but it stills bums you out when you can't have dessert. How's it going this week?

@TYSONJA - welcome! Those are awesome goals. Let us know how it's going!

I am finally starting to feel a bit better - my detox symptoms are starting to go away. It sucks when you're eating so healthfully and you feel like crap! haha. I made these (http://ohsheglows.com/2014/05/08/two-layer-raw-chocolate-brownies/) this week and they are DELICIOUS! I substituted date paste in for the maple syrup. If anyone needs a chocolate fix, that is a great one!

I guess today is my day 9. woooo! So far I haven't had any sugar that I'm aware of, although I had a few raisins that might have been sweetened. They were from the bulk bins so I couldn't check the label, ugh, and I didn't think about it until later. Anywho, I'm happy with that!

Hello bees! Is anybody still with me?

I think today is my day 15. Me, DH, LO, and my mom went camping over the weekend and DH and my mom had smores one night and then she left the chocolate bars on my kitchen counter after we got home from the trip. I was going to hide them away in the pantry until she comes over and takes them out of my house, but instead I decided to leave them out on the counter. Every time I walk by them, I feel so strong! I love it. And I NEVER EVER thought I could just walk by chocolate like that in the afternoon!

@Dagny: I haven't been sticking with it the last few days...lychee boba drink, coconut Popsicle but I am much better about sugar intake!
