If you cut LO's food into shapes have you found that it makes a difference in their willingness to eat them? What tools do you use?

I think if you have a picky toddler it can! if I were to do that I would start with cookie cutters!

It didn't make a difference for my LO so I stopped! I used veggie cutters that I found on Amazon.

I haven't found it helped too much with trying new things but it does seem to help with things they are iffy about. I mostly just do it because they get a kick out of it and it is a fun way to have mini celebrations.

@autumnlove: That's what I'm afraid of. I see all these cute little shapes and supplies for bento boxes and I keep thinking my picky toddler would still not eat them

@anbanan15: She does like the cute shapes but she eats everything right now. I'll start cutting again if I need a secret weapon!

it definitely helped with charlie. especially things like eggs. he wasn't a huge egg person, but once i started cutting them into stars, he loved it.
i didn't start bentos with him until he was 18 months. i put less effort into making olive's bentos cute because i don't think she cares.

I think the shapes are super cute and the bento boxes look amazing!
I'm actually worried that it would make LO not want to eat even more? Has that happened to anyone else?
When I was a little girl I never ate anything wrapped in a fancy wrapper or shaped...like a shaped rice treat or foil wrapped chocolates. I made my mom display them in the china cabinet.

It does not work for DD so I stopped. No, maybe it worked for the first few times and then she lost interest so I stopped doing bentos altogether. I think it will work as a more occasional thing for her.

It worked for the first few times, then stopped working. We only tried with sandwiches (I used a heart cookie cutter). Makes them crustless too, but when he eats sandwiches he likes crust, so... yeah. I don't bother anymore.

I haven't tried cutting food into shapes, but I started using animal toothpicks in my LO's bentos. He gets really excited to eat with the toothpicks and loves to point out each animal. He is generally a good eater, and the toothpicks only encourage him even more to try foods that he might glance over.

@anbanan15: i don't have the time anymore, but if i do it occasionally, the kids definitely eat better. for instance i did a valentine bento with heart shaped foods and both kids ate so well.
i would do it occasionally? or maybe to introduce a new food or a food lo doesn't like as much?

@Andrea: @mrs. wagon: Thanks! I haven't found or come up with a bread recipe that works for us yet, so that is out. I would be using it to cut fruit and veggies basically. Feeding a picky toddler with only a handful of foods is so hard!

@Mrs. Bee: Thanks. I think I will try to look into some cutters for fruits and veggies. He loves trains right now so I will look for them.

@yin: agree i think the picks work better than cutting into shapes. but i got lazy about using those too. i actually put one in charlie's lunch today for the first time in well over a year i think.
skewering food makes charlie eat better. i forgot about that and need to start doing it again. for instance if i put sausage on a pick, he eats it better than if i just slice it up.

@anbanan15: how about cold cuts and cheese? I rolled up cold cuts around slices of cheese and that worked pretty well for a while. Then he decided he doesn't like meat. I think he's back on meat now. Who knows.

@mrs. wagon: Meat and cheese are out He can eat salmon without getting sick but he has been refusing it. I should try making it into shapes and see if that helps. Thanks!
