I have prescription coverage that includes fertility meds. I feel luck to have that. My medical insurance doesn't cover any treatments. We paid out of pocket for IVF.

I live in MD where there is mandated coverage if the company has more than 50 employees (there are some other exemptions for religious organizations). My company's plan has pretty decent coverage, including a limited number of IVF procedures (I think 3, and only with the husband's sperm). I think you have to have tried for a certain length of time to qualify. We originally went with my insurance for that reason, but we were fortunate that we did not have fertility issues. I am now on my husband's insurance plan. Because he works for the federal government, his plan is except from state mandated coverage, so we no longer have coverage.

I voted testing, meds, etc but our insurance only covered diagnostic testing, RE appointments, IUI and bloodwork/ultrasounds. All meds were out of pocket.

I voted other. My insurance covers anything under the umbrella of infertility up to a lifetime max of $10,000.

So I've had testing & 5 IUIs (including meds and monitoring here) and have used about half of our allotment.

My husband's company just got bought out so our insurance is about to change and even though we are done having babies, I'm kind of sad we are losing the option of using up the rest.

Right now, the insurance I have covers evaluation but not treatment. If we needed it, I could change plans to have coverage up to $10K. It would be $2K more out of pocket per year.

I have IF coverage for up to $7500 for doctors visits and procedures and $7500 for meds lifetime max.. which basically covers one round of IVF. IUI's also went toward that max, but surprisingly all the doctors visits and monitoring did not, which helped out a ton.

My insurance doesn't cover anything. I never thought my family size would be governed by the insurance I had.

Does anyone know a ballpark figure of what one round of IVF costs?

Mine covered a lot of diagnostic testing--my HSG test, allllll my bloodwork, etc.

@Leialou & @FLIEGEPILZHUT: Thank you so much! That doesn't seem so terrible. When I went into my initial RE appt (when I thought my insurance covered IF) it was about $5000 for the bloodwork/ultrasound/consultation so I was expecting an astronomical number for IVF.

Mine covers up to $30,000 in fertility drugs, but only 50% is covered so I would have to spend 60k in total to get the full amount. We also have a HSA/flex spending account, which for a couple is around $4,000/year. That can be used for a multitude of things including fertility treatments, even pregnancy/ovulation tests are included.

ETA: Since I'm in Canada, fertility testing is free. Yes, we pay for it through our taxes and often it's slow, but we don't have to pay out of pocket. You don't have to start paying for out of pocket until you are going through actual fertility treatments.

I agree that there needs to be more IF coverage. It makes me so mad that it's so overlooked!

My insurance doesn't cover IVF but does cover IUI. Of course, our only option at this point is IVF, so I voted for evaluation but not treatment.

I live in the same state as @Shutterbug: and I believe I have pretty similar coverage. I'm extremely grateful to live in a state that mandates these benefits.

@alphagam84: you're probably not going to get many people agreeing with you on the "Infertility" board with that comment

We have amazing IF coverage! My understanding is that it covers 80% of everything (after deductible) including IVF treatments. Thankfully we didn't need to take advantage (at least for this pregnancy) but it was really nice to know that we had such great coverage, especially because my mom had IF troubles so I was worried I would too.

Infertility can be caused by many different things including PCOS, endometriosis, varicocele in men. Those are just off the top of my head. There are so many other causes. And it absolutely can be life threatening. I am at higher risk for uterine cancer because I don't have regular cycles.

We have zero coverage and our state doesn't require anything. I really don't think there will be any huge reform in this because of the mindset above. People who don't deal with it, don't really get it.

I've had three different insurances in three different states since starting my IF journey in 2011. In MD, it covered everything. In RI (DH had a federal gov't job), nothing was covered. In MA, everything is covered! We finally conceived in MA through IVF. It's been a long journey.

@PurplePumps: Yes, I do. Though I just tried to find specifics and it just says everything is covered. I imagine there are some limits like Shutterbug has around how many IUIs, IVFs, etc.

@Shutterbug: Yeah, I don't find any medical insurance to be very well informed about what they cover. I had a lot of arguments with people at Harvard Pilgrim because they were uninformed and could only tell me "you have to try for a year" and I was like "Um, you missed the part about needing to be otherwise healthy. And I'm not, I have PCOS and do not ovulate without medication". And the response would be <crickets>.
