ugh. I will never understand why people (particularly other parents?!) seem so confident my kids will "crash!" when they're overtired. maybe I'm just unlucky - but this never happens!
my 9 month old took a 10 minute car nap and aside from that, has been awake since 11 am. she's a miserable, screaming wreck at the moment. it would be way easier if she'd just pass out from exhaustion!

@sorrycharlie: WORSE!! He actually wakes up earlier when he goes to bed late, It sucks. But, to be fair, it was much worse when he was younger. He is such a better sleeper now.

It never works out for us - overtired makes for really rough nights and usually an early wake for the day over here.

Completely hit or miss these days. One night she is overtired and cranky mess, crying as I put her to bed, then she immediately crashes and sleeps through and sleeps in in the morning- awesome! Another night, same situation, and while she usually does fall asleep right away, she wakes up sometime in the middle of the night, takes forever to go back to sleep, and wakes up way early. So yeah. Who knows.

Nope!! If he gets less than 3 hours in naps he will wake up 2-3x at night. 3 hours or close to it? 1 wakeup late in the morning.
If I keep him up too long he will have a crappy 30 minute nap. It's very rare he will have a looking nap from being overtired.

When she was a baby (like maybe less than 9 mo or so?) overtired meant way worse sleep. At this point (17mo) she seems to crash out and sleep fine/normal. But she is never a kid that would like, fall asleep on the couch or in a car seat. She needs a sensory deprivation chamber to fall asleep even on days when she skips her nap!

Worse for sure. It's like he's reliving the day's events as he wakes up every few hours yelling out. Right now we are struggling through some horrible regression at 20 months and it's killing us! Especially on the days he gets overtired during the day

Sleep is the same at night but there are definitely more emotional outbursts/tantrums!

Overtired = worse sleep.
He is harder to put to bed, sleeps worse and usually gets up earlier. We have to stick to our bedtime even if it means no fun evening outings.

Agree with all of you.bedtime is pretty easy for us regardless but our LO has a lot of trouble napping if she is over tired.

Worse, always worse. When I tell people this irl they don't believe me. I remember reading somewhere at some point that sleep begets sleep.

This is something I have witnessed so I know it happens. There are kids that "crash" and their parents do not understand what it's like to have an overtired monster!
LO was a sleep fighter from the very early newborn days so all I have known is chasing the sleep and protecting the sleep and worshipping the sleep. I am in awe of parents toting around their kid that just drifts off when they're tired.

Not in the past but recently he's started sleeping later in the mornings after days when he didn't nap as well as usual. He always takes about an hour to fall asleep at bedtime though, and that doesn't change.

Worse. We put E in an evening creche session while we were on holiday - 7-10pm - so we could have a quiet dinner out together. We were back at the room by 10.05pm and put her straight to bed. Cue 3 hours of squealing, yelling, jumping on the bed, crying, taking nappy (diaper) off and weeing in the bed, wailing, singing.....It was almost 1am when she finally went to sleep and she was up at 7am as usual. Needless to say, we didn't try it again.

Worse because overtired for us means he was running around and playing a lot. Which means he'll wake up complaining his legs hurt. Pain = no sleep!
However, there is that PERFECT balance of overtiredness where it's not due to over exertion during play that will cause him to STTN, but those are super rare!

The baby sleeps worse, she can never get into a deep sleep when she's super tired, our toddler seems to "crash" but you better not wake her up the next morning if you can avoid it, she is a grizzly bear unless she wakes up on her own terms.
