Mine does. She insists new people call her Nina and wants to change her name officially. It has been a few weeks of this now! I have just about given up and started telling people to play along for now.

@808love: My daughter is super literal and if I call her any sort of nickname, she insists that I call her by her real name!
Why Nina btw?

@mrbee: Haha! Well, she has a great name so that's good- it stuck.
I think we talked about nicknames before and then said she wanted a nickname. (I remember wanting a nickname when I was a kid!) Then her dad rattled off a bunch of names and she picked that one. She also said a kid in her preschool class has started calling her that now. Currently, she doesn't want Nina as a nickname though. She wants it as her REAL name. Funny thing, I think it kind of fits her! Especially the meanings-independent, strong, grace, leadership.

@808love: That's so cool that she knows what she wants! If it fits her and she loves it, I would just go with it for now!

In kindergarten I met a girl who I really liked and insisted on having her name! She's one of my best friends to this day

@knittylady: Wow! Awesome story. BFFs from the start!
@Mamaof2: Hahaha! Gotta be a preschooler!!
@mrbee: Ok, I will relax about it then....

In preschool I used to want my name to be Amy. It was because I could spell that name, but couldn't figure out my own 9 letter name.

Nope! She doesn't like anyone to call her anything but her name, her FULL name. Whenever someone (besides us) uses a nickname she says, "No, my name is First Middle Last!"

@Miss Ariel: I remember being super jealous of an Amy too! I have a 10 letter name and writing my name was the hardest part of anything in preschool.

I remember really wishing my name was Rachel when I was maybe 6. I have no idea why that in particular. I ultimately wound up changing my nickname (several times), so I guess that dissatisfaction with my name stuck.
When I was young my nickname was Beth (still is with family, but I use it at all otherwise), and when I was a preschooler I thought that it went on the end of all my names, since my first name is Elizabeth. I would tell people my name was "Elizabeth 'shell-Beth [last name]-Beth." (My middle name is Michelle, but I didn't pronounce it right.)

My oldest daughter insisted on the nickname "Lala" for about two years. We didn't love it, but rolled with it, and then one day as suddenly as she chose it, she said "I'm done with Lala, please call me by my full name." And don't ever, ever cal her CeeCee... It just gets ugly!

@missariel I have a nine letter name that I had to cut down to 6 so I feel your pain. LOs name is 3 letters so she made it longer.
@mrsjacks I'll be sure not to call her by her retirees formerly known as nickname.
@torchwood does it have Beth in it?
Little ones are so fascinating! I am hoping it is just a phase as I want her to like her name. I wish we could officially change our names whenever we wanted. This year, call me 808Sunshine.

@808love: When I was younger I wanted to change my name to Kimberly sooooo bad! (the pink power ranger, lol).
My mom said no, and to stop it, and I did... now I love my name!

@WinterBee: hmmmm I wonder if I have to go no nonsense approach like your mom. I thought no harm done for now but then we went through customs at the border today and my heart was racing because I thought LO would say something like That's not my name!! during the passport questioning. Whew--she didn't.

My husband changed his name when he was a little older, and I cannot imagine calling him by his given name. It's their name, and they have to live with it - I would support it, honestly. If it's a passing fancy, ok. If not, then it's who they are.
