We see our pediatrician next week for D's one-year appointment (GAH!), but I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has any input/thoughts. We have done an EXTREMELY loose interpretation of BLW in our house - he gets purees at daycare and we usually do a combination of purees and table food at home. He eats things like pasta, chunks of fruit and veggie, and crackers or toast with hummus just fine. He also seems to like meats (we've tried chicken and meatballs). The issue is that he tends to shovel a TON of food in his mouth at once (like 5-6 pieces of pasta or 3-4 pieces of chicken), then chews it or lets his saliva break it down to the point where he can swallow it. Lately, though, he completely freaks.out. when we give him meat. Last night we gave him small pieces of chicken with hummus. He, as usual, shoveled like 3-4 pieces in his mouth, chewed it up, and then started just screaming, complete with big fat tears rolling down his cheek. We tried offering water to help him "wash it down," but he just turned his head and kept on screaming. Finally I just went in and dug the food out with my finger.

I don't know if he doesn't like the texture? Figured out after 4 pieces that he didn't like the taste? Can't figure out how to swallow it? I've tried putting only a piece or two at a time on his tray to encourage him to chew and swallow what's in his mouth, but he just sits there and yells until he gets more to put in his mouth! It's ridiculous! (Don't even get me started on the tantrums already happening at ONE YEAR).

Wat could possibly be going on? He absolutely devours pasta, killed a whole huge slice of eggplant parm, mows through butternut squash and sweet potatoes....
