I have a friend that may watch LO #2 when I go back to work. The goal is for baby not exposed to so many germs right away and to save some money.
Daycare for LO #2 would be $167 a week.
What would a fair price be for a SAHM with 2 children to watch LO in her home? I will provide all equipment, food, diapers, etc and It will be from 8:30-4:30 M-F.

A friend of mine is paying something like 35.00-40.00 a day for a similar situation. But seems like we might live in different cost of living areas because we pay 50.00 a day for in home care with a licensed provider.

My SIL pays a SAHM $30/day to watch her child. I'm pretty sure infant day care around here would be around $250/week at a good center.

I would think at least $100/week ($20/day). But I would offer maybe $150/week?
I would also outline how exactly this is going to play out. Is she just putting the baby into her schedule (meaning, baby goes on errands, to the playground with her kids, gets woken from naps by loud older kids, etc). Or is the baby the primary focus and she is willing to stay home and tend to the baby first as a primary caregiver?

@babynumber1: $167 a week for infant care? Wow, that's so cheap. I had college student watch DD while she was on break, I paid her $12 an hour. I would pay a SAHM somewhere between $10 - $12 an hour.

I can understand paying a babysitter or a part time fill in sitter $10+ an hour. But if this is going to be a full time thing, and just a side activity for a SAHM, I doubt she's expecting to make $400/week. Also, due to what a local center would cost, it appears this is a lower cost of living area.

@T.H.O.U.: I agree. I've considered watching a kid in my home and there is no way I'd expect someone to pay me 10.00 an hour. I would expect to make less than someone would pay a licensed in home daycare provider.

@Silva: maybe it's the area but when I have a mothers helper and I'm still here and they are playing in basement I still pay $10 an hour.

I think paying 2/3 of the cost of a licensed daycare seems reasonable.
With a lot of daycares you still have to provide food (especially for infants who are only drinking BM/formula), diapers, wipes, etc. so that wouldn't factor into my calculation at all, personally.
And she's got 2 other kids so it isn't like you're paying for 1:1 nanny-type care.

Like @yoursilverlining: said, I would pay about 2/3 or 3/4 of the average weekly cost of daycare. I found it helpful to think in terms of weekly costs, not daily or hourly; since it's not a nanny/babysitter situation.
It also is somewhat dependent on my salary. I didn't want to pay any more than 50% of my take-home salary. At that point, I start wondering why I bother working... (which is influenced by the fact that I'd like to stay home and I'm not in LOVE with my job....)

For a short time we paid SAHM to keep our LO at $25/day on PT basis. It was more expensive on a daily basis than a licensed in-home daycare (which would have worked out to $20/day) and we were ok with that for the one on one aspect.
And man do I miss that kind of daycare rate!!! It would cost $50-75 daily rate where we live now.

I had this exact situation for a while and paid 110 a week for my toddler and 140 a week for my infant. The sahm provided all food for my toddler. I provided everything else.

I had a similar situation and structured it like a nanny share.
Figured out what a nanny share would be and split that cost and added a bit because she came to our house with her child.

We are in central NC in a medium sized city, so a reasonable cost of living area. We have a great center daycare that the older one is at which is on target with other centers in the area.
I think we will offer $100 a week ($400 a month) and see if that is what she is thinking. I just didn't want to low ball her.

@babynumber1: It sounds like your friend would be taking on your LO and keeping her primary focus as SAHM rather than becoming an in home daycare provider that also watches her own kids. $100 a week but that sounds reasonable relative to daycare cost for that arrangement.

We had a SAHM do care for our son, she had two other kids. We paid $130/week and that's very comparable to what we pay now for a licensed in-home provider.
I live in the midwest, if that makes a difference. Oh, and this was for a preschool-age child. I'd pay more for an infant.

@pinkcupcake: That's $100 a day, which is $500 a week, which is $2000 a month. Lots of people can't afford that, at all. That's not a very standard rate for full-time SAHM side-job care unless you live in a very high cost-of-living area. Why would someone pay a SAHM mom $500 a week when they could pay a daycare $167 a week?

@pinkcupcake: Same here. I'm paying $16-25 per hour for my occasional nannies. I assumed if I went to a full time basis that I would have to pay at least $15 an hour.

man daycare is cheap where you live... ours is $107 per day... the cheapest you might find for infant (home care) would be about $50/day
