DD1 turns 3 in March and we're planning on getting her a small pet. Either a Beta or a Hermit Crab. Anyone have either and have any insight?

Insights - they both die easily. I had lots of fish and hermit crabs as a kid....
We typically got our hermit crabs while we were on vacation at the beach. That was our "special" thing...until it died.
A fish might be the best bet right now. If she is going to be in charge of feeding the fish, make sure she has instructions on how and when to feed the fish. Ours usually died because we overfed them. Fish will eat whatever you feed them so even if they are mouthing at the top of the tank, it doesn't always mean they're hungry. Feed them on a schedule and don't stray from it and it will probably live longer than mine did...

@mediagirl: was just about to say the same thing. I'm squeamish about dead fish floating in tanks because of all the ones we went through as kids!

I've had beta fish that last a few years! Hermit crab lasted a week. Lol

We've had a few beta fish, and I would definitely recommend them as an easy first pet. My stepson enjoyed the whole process of picking them out, feeding daily, watching them swim. They lived about a year on average. My mom teaches preschool and always has a beta as a class pet. The kiddos love that the fish will usually notice when someone's watching or close by and swim around/interact.
