LO will transition from the baby room to toddler after he turns one next month and our daycare requires he wear shoes in the toddler room when they go outside. Since LO isn't walking yet we haven't purchased his first shoes yet. Do you recommend we go ahead and have him fitted at a store like Stride Rite and buy him a shoe like a Robeez or do we buy him something cheaper and wait to fit him till he is closer to walking?

i would wait until he's walking to make sure he has the right size for that. but i bet you could find some used robeez for a deal! DD was an early walker and i was a big fan of those! they basically just pull on.

DS also wasn't walking when he moved up so I got him some soft soled Pedipeds - just enough of a bottom to be used outside but cant get wet!

I don't think it'll change that much in 1 month so I guess you could go ahead and seek out a pair now.
I would go for something soft-soled and not too bulky. Our faves in the very beginning were See Kai Run/Smaller, and Robeez mini shoes. I noticed the SKR 9-12 month and 12-18 month had a pretty big size difference so I think even if you purchase now, you'll have lots of time to make use of them.

Our LO isn't walking (lots of standing, creeping and a step here and there) but our daycare also asked we provide him with "shoes". We got him Robeez for indoor wear, since they have suede bottoms I don't think they are the best for outside. I also have a pair of pedipeds and those seems a little sturdier for going outside.

We had to do the same when DD transitioned to the toddler room, but they specifically said the shoes couldn't be soft-soled so they could be worn outside. We got her a pair of Stride Rite SRT Soft Motion sneakers -- the soles are really flexible so they were easy for her to learn to walk in. We've pretty much stuck with Stride Rites ever since, we love them.

DS was wobbly walking at 1, but before that we got him a pair of hard soled shoes at stride rite. I think it helped him walk. At his 9 month wellness check, the pedi did recommend we start putting shoes on him so he's used to something on his feet.

@Mamaof2: we got pedipeds too and it was perfect. Once he started walking we got Stride Rite soft motion soles.
