This morning our pedi told us that we should feel free to start giving him water in his bottle, a regular cup or a sippy cup. We'd like to start with a sippy cup. Is there an advantage to skipping the more...nipply-shaped spouts in favor of a straw? What kind do you use and would you recommend it?

I think the main disadvantage of the sippy vs. the straw cup is that you have to bring your own sippy if you're out, but if your LO knows how to use a straw cup you can just stick a straw into any drink.
My LO learned pretty fast with the Nuby. It's still my favourite. We also have an Avent, Munchkin and a steel bottle with a sippy spout that's similar to the Avent. We have a couple of straw cups too.

Straw cups are supposed to be better from speak and language stand points. It's what SLP and OT's recommend.
We love the ZoLi and also the Innobaby Sippin Smart cups with weighted straws (allows your LO to get all of their drink out and drink in any position). The Lollacup is also a similar type of cup which I have heard good things about as well.

@anbanan15: interesting! I've never heard a before and I'm an OT. I also know many SLPs and they've never mentioned anything either. I'll have to look into it some more!

@Sammyfab: Really? When we had an SLP consult she was overjoyed that DS used one for their benefits with speech since they encourage many of the muscle movements used with talking. Our nutritionalist was also happy to see one being used. I've heard a lot of other people from my food allergy community day their SLP/OT also recommended them.

@anbanan15: well, we've never had a speech consult but when I talked to my friend who is an SLP about some of my speech concerns she never mentioned the sippy vs. straw debate (although I never asked either). I did do some reading about how using the straw helps with proper placement of the tongue for speech and muscle development of the tongue, and while it makes sense, I don't think the tongue placement with a sippy is *that* different. Either way, thanks for bringing this to my attention! My LO is one now and I'm just going to stick with our straw cups from now on (although I read the recommendation is to totally ditch sippy cups by age 2!).

Our favorites are the Zoli and the Playtex straw cups that have the squeeze spot. We use straws because it's the first thing LO took to. She still can't really figure out that she needs to tip a sippy back.

I second the recommendation for the Playtex straw cups with the squeeze spot. Our baby really couldn't make heads or tails of the sippy cup and she loves to sip from the straw cup.
