Ok it's official - we have to transition Charlie out of his crib. He can now climb out of it while wearing his sleep sack.
The question now is.... should we go with a Montessori style floor bed?
Or buy the toddler bed conversion kit for his crib? Those of you with little ones in toddler beds, do they stay in them or wait until you come get them?
Bedtime has been such a battle lately. Charlie has been a naughty boy.... Mr. and Mrs. Bee are sleep deprived!

For real?? Do you have a video of him climbing out with his sleep sack? I never thought that they could get their legs up and over with the sleep sack on.
My plan is to just go for a full bed that is either on the floor or low to the ground.

@Andrea: he just started yesterday. this morning when he woke up he climbed out of his crib, opened his door, stood at the top of the stairs and called for daddy!

@Andrea: He's done it many times now... although he actually fell doing it this morning, and it's only by sheer luck and cat-like reflexes that I was lying on the floor nearby and able to catch him with my legs.

i just went and bought the toddler conversion kit for charlie's crib so tonight will be his first night in a big boy bed. i thought we could keep him in his crib at least a couple more months based on what other parents told me.... but he let us know that he needs a big boy bed now!

LO sleeps on a floor bed now so we'll definitely keep him in one. Not sure what the pros & cons are though. We didn't do the floor bed for any reason other than the fact that it was easier to co-sleep with him when we were co-sleeping!

@banana: cosleeping is the pro and con of a floor bed! if we have a full size bed, charlie will want to cosleep. i'm hoping he's so happy about his big boy bed that he'll want to go to bed by himself. right now we are holding his hand through his crib, while he begs to sleep next to us. but anytime he sleeps on the floor, he wakes up super duper early!

We have LO on her floor bed still. She's actually been good about not crawling out lately! If anything she'll just crawl out of bed once a night if she wakes hungry.

we plan to convert the crib, but if by that time we have another baby on the way then we will just leave the crib as it is and buy a bunk bed that they can share when they grow up

@mrs.bee: Man, I hope my LO continues sleeping on the floor bed on his own. I don't think I can go back to co-sleeping now that he sleeps all night by himself! A close friend of mine is going through the same thing as you right now (she has a 3 year old). She was a good sleeper this whole time and all of a sudden, she wants to sleep with mommy and daddy. I wonder if this is something that all toddlers go through at around that age?

@banana: more than wanting to sleep with us, he just doesn't want to sleep! now that he can communicate most things, he is becoming much more stubborn! how lovely the age from 15 months - 24 months was!

@mrs.bee: Oh no. LO is gonna be 24 months next month. 
I'll try to be mentally prepared for sleep regression, although with our 2nd baby on her way, I'm sure nobody in our family will be sleeping much. I never realized how nice it is to sleep all night. In college, I thought sleep was a waste of time! Once you get past this "not wanting to sleep" stage, I would LOVE to see a blog post on this with tips and advice!

I highly recommend a floor bed. I started my then 12 month old on it a couple of months ago and it's working out great. You need to babyproof the room well and install a safety gate at his bedroom door.
There's the occasional roll out of bed, but since his mattress is just 4 inches high, and his drop cushioned by a rug with padding underneath, it's nothing.

Ugh, I dread when this day comes. We are SO INCREDIBLY LUCKY because RJ has never tried to climb out of his crib. And he only needs us to stay with him to fall asleep when he's super sick. Almost every night he'll go down without a peep, but every now and then (mostly for naps on weekends) he will cry when we leave the room. Because of this for a good 3 weeks we planned full days out so he would sleep in his stroller or the car instead-- we just didn't want to deal with the naptime battles.
With bedtime, we experimented with pushing his bedtime later and being super active with him before bedtime, to tire him out more. The days he was outside all day at daycare, he would go to bed fine, but on rainy or cold days when he was less active he was putting up a fight. That seemed to work a little better. But now we're back to starting the bedtime routine around 6:30 and he's fine with it now. It could have been a coincidence with his behavior changes.
It is SO funny to see Charlie and RJ side by side as they grow up. For the things Charlie does first, I feel like I get a little preview before RJ starts doing it! Like the talking!

His door is a sliding door. I do close it mostly because outside his room is the living room where my husband watches TV while I put the baby down for the night. It's a bit noisy.
But when my husband is out of town or the living room is otherwise empty, I leave his door open.
In the morning, I usually hear the door slide open before my son starts looking for me (anywhere within 1 minute and 15 minutes of waking up).

we have a floor bed and at first he'd wait until we went to get him, but he'll come get us in the morning now when he's up and ready. good luck and hopefully you get some sleep!

Hope it goes well tonight. Keep us posted. LO is still in a crib but I've seen him start to think about climbing out now. Luckily he's a bit of a scaredy cat. I totally think he would leave his bed and come into our room if he is in a big boy bed so I'm not sure what our plan is as of yet.
