No, there's no such thing as nursing too much as far as his health goes. Viviana still nurses 6-10 times a day at 15 months, and eats a reasonable amount of solid food. She's very healthy and her weight has pretty much maintained the same percentile.

Even though they NEED milk before 12 months, that doesn't mean that he's not still getting a lot of nutrition from it now that he's older. It's almost like a safety net - while he develops his appetite and learns how to enjoy solid food, he's still getting some significant nutrition from your milk. It's a great thing!

@MoonMoon: my LO still does this sometimes an she is almost two. I can't speak to the nursing but I do know LO did purées and drank milk/liquid calories here and there throughout the year when she didn't seem to eat enough and that seemed to work out ok especially in hot weather... If I had to guess I'd say nursing in July is good for hydration and calories. Also my ped says to look more at how much LO eats in a week than a day.

@MoonMoon: my LO has always been a booby baby and she was probably 14-15 months old before she really started eating food in any great quantities. She's now 21 months old and eating alot more solids but still bf'ing 4-6 times a day but she can go 6-7 hours without bf'ing if we're out and about.

It might make you feel better to know that Kellymom recommends a diet of 75% milk and 25% solids at 12 months, 50/50 at 18 months and 25% bm and 75% solids at two years. It's also worth noting that the majority of the "mainstream" nutrition advice is based on a child being weaned at twelve months.
