For the past day now LO who is 2.5 weeks old has been forcefully spitting up after each feeding. I think I have an over supply, I'm always leaking and it feels like my breasts are always full. I am also using a nipple shield, so I wonder if she is sucking in too much air while she is eating
I'm just so frustrated! I want to keep breast feeding, but I also don't want her uncomfortable. I want to also make sure she's getting enough food. Any suggestions??

For my LO, the nipple shield let in way too much air and she was fussier and extremely gassy/uncomfortable from it. I switch to pumping until my nipples healed. By 10 weeks old, LO got bigger, her mouth grew and then was able to latch properly.
Hang in there! I know how frustrating it can be!

If you are dealing with an oversupply, getting that under control will help (I had both an oversupply and used a nipple shield for DS1). Try block feeding (only feed on one side, no matter how many times) for 2 hours, then switch for the next two hours. It took 3 days to get my oversupply under control that way. I didn't experience difficulty with air in the shield.

@Jess1483: I guess I'm not sure if I have an over supply or not, that's just what I'm assuming.
@HLK208: while you were pumping, did you offer the breast at all?

To drain the breast probably a good 15 minutes, although I feel like I'm not 100% sure it's empty

@MrsBrewer: That doesn't sound much like an oversupply. When we had an oversupply, poops were very green, and draining the breast completely took upwards of an hour. I would guess that the problem is either with the nipple shield or just that babies are super gassy.
I'm sorry. I had an awful time with breastfeeding my first for the first three months. But we pushed through and made it to 19 months. The nipple shield was a pain, and I don't really remember when I was able to get rid of it, but it did save us in the long run, for sure. I'd be a little cautious about switching to pumping this early, just because going back to the breast could be really tricky, but if that's what you need to do and you're willing to pump until whatever goal you've set for yourself if she won't return to the breast, then that might be an option.
It might be worth seeing a lactation consultant, but I was shocked at how gassy my baby was (just by virtue of being a baby) for a few months. And spitting up is generally pretty normal too (even projectile spit-up). Worth discussing with your pediatrician and/or an LC for sure, though.

my forceful vomiting baby was definently related to oversupply. I block fed and waited it out until it finally regulated at about 6 weeks. She still will forcefully vomit if she hasn't fed in awhile and my boobs are really full.

@MrsBrewer: I am pro-nipple shield when they are needed, too, but can I ask why you are using one? I was going back through my e-mails from the La Leche League to figure out some stuff myself (from when I was nursing my first son), and there's some good advice about when/how to try going back to the breast. If you're interested, I would be happy to send it along. It looks like we used one for a bit over a month, from about 2.5 weeks to about a month and a half. It was quite a relief when I was able to ditch the shield.

@Jess1483: yea I'm really not sure if it's over supply or not! Maybe she is just super gassy? I'm reluctant to change my diet get, but I have been staying away from heavily seasoned, fatty foods.
I was given/told to use the nipple shield while in the hospital by the LC there. She just said that my LO had a bad latch, and even now she doesn't open up wide enough to get the whole nipple in. I think I want to call the LC again though and just touch base and see how things are going I would really love to ditch the shield, I just don't know how to wean

@MrsBrewer: only once a day...it her latch hurt too much! It got much, much better with time.

@MrsBrewer: Ah, I see. My guy was super little and couldn't get my nipple in, either. Eventually, I was in so much pain that the nipple shield was the only thing that saved nursing for us. I will forward the e-mail to you (well, wall it to you) so you have it for when you want to try--whenever that might be. For awhile, when I was trying to figure out if I could ditch it, I'd try it once a day at some point during the feed. When it finally became less painful, I switched back to the breast (which luckily was a relatively painless transition for us).
I didn't do any dietary changes except that I did notice he was super gassy when I ate cruciferous vegetables (in case that's something that sets your little one off, too).
I'd definitely talk to the LC about other ways to work on the latch, too. I seriously hated my nipple shield by the end (so much extra work!) so I understand wanting to get rid of it as soon as you can

Idk why she had such a bad latch though, she was a big baby, 8lbs 2.5 oz!

@MrsBrewer: To me it doesn't sound like the LC you saw gave a lot of good advice. I'd probably try to get in touch with one (maybe a different one). A good LC should be able to give you support in different holds or positions or how to get a deeper latch.

@MamaG: I would have to agree. She was in my room for maybe 15 minutes and brought in the nipple shield pretty quickly.
