Awesome!! My insurance only covers hand pumps!

@MamaMoose: how did you go about getting that? My LO is already 4.5 months old so it's probably too late for me to try huh?

Lucky! I contacted my insurance company and the only pump they offer is one made by Mebby, and I've never heard of it, so I'm a little hesitant to get it. Also, because they said they'll only cover one very two years, so I'm hoping that if I have a second, the pump selection will be better then.

@Bao: I just called our insurance 800 number and they gave me the number to a medical supply company that provided the pump. I just had to give them my plan ID and they shipped it out to me. Easy peasy. I think some plans have a sixty day limit but you might as well call and ask. It can't hurt!

Lucky! Mine covers purchase of a hand pump or rental of a hospital grade pump for 3 months. I spent 2 hrs on the phone with my insurance company trying to figure it out and find a supplier yesterday (with one customer service person telling me absolutely the wrong information) plus I have to get a scrip from my dr., and the office hasn't ever dealt with it before, so instead of just writing and faxing the damn scrip, I have to bring it up in person to my dr. On Monday. It has been so frustrating.

@dagret: I had to get a script from my doctor too and the nurse seemed a little perplexed by it. I think they are all just getting used to this now that ObamaCare is allowing for insurance coverage of pumps.

@HLK208: My understanding is that starting in 2013 your insurance has to cover SOMETHING. It might just be a hand pump but the do need to cover breastpumps. You should call and ask!

@MamaMoose: Totally not related to the topic but just wanted to say that I dig your username

I just got mine (medela pump in style) covered by insurance as well. It took a lot of phone calls to my insurance, dr office and the medical supplier but it was worth it to save the money!

I got one too! But my insurance only covers a hygiea pump which is a brand I've never even heard of. I hope it's good! That's awesome that you got a Medela.

@MamaMoose: Yes they do rule! My insurance covered my Freestyle, too. You're going to love...even more so that it was free. (Although technically it's not free since we pay for insurance!)

@hilsy85: the hygeia is what I want to buy with my HSA money after my rental period is up. It's a completely closed system - you can resell it OR return it to the company to be recycled. You can't do that with amedas or medelas.

@MamaMoose: it's been in effect since August though, you'd think they'd have it down by now!

I'm so jeal! Every time we call our insurance they tell us something different, so we're working on joining the free breast pump club.

@tororojo: does your insurance have a special program for expectant mothers? That'd who finally gave me the correct information.

Ah, thanks for this reminder! I just checked online, and my insurance is supposed to start covering pumps now. I totally forgot about it and was about to buy one!

@hilsy85: Hygeia is also WHO compliant. I've heard lots of great things about that brand.

@MamaMoose: I wouldn't have known about this if it weren't for Hellobee - I need to check on this soon!

@hilsy85: I have the Hygeia Enjoye and LOVE it (well, as much as you CAN love a pump...). I hadn't hear of the brand until I came across Oh'Apostrophe's review on her blog, then it started showing up everywhere. It's a closed system, WHO compliant and my favorite is complete control of the pump suction and speed independently. The closed system is awesome since you can share the pump (just buy a personal accessory set) and is covered for 3 years vs the typical 1-year warranty on pumps.

@MamaMoose: my insurance sent me a medela symphony (hospital grade pump). It's a rental but I am grateful to be able to use it as long as I want

I think my insurance company told me that only a manual pump was free, BUT that if I purchased a electric pump from one of their approved suppliers, the cost of the equipment goes towards our deductible/total pay out for baby/hospital bills, etc. (We have PPO). She told me that for sure we'll hit our maximum pay-out just with the delivery anyways, so if I paid for the electric pump from their supplier, it would in essence be free. I haven't looked at the different models yet, but that's our "plan" for a free pump.

I bought my freestyle but next time around I'm getting a new one from my insurance! I'm sure I would have worn my down real good by then...plus ill be working and I want to have a home pump and a work pump...why not? My husband works hard for our medical insurance!
