Did anyone read the front page article about by 3 kids who aren't in school are falling behind? I thought the current thought was let kids be kids and they have plenty of time to learn and in other countries kids don't learn to read until 6 etc. Does anyone have any thoughts on this and why we're hearing different things? I only have my child in part time preschool basically for fun and socialization and this made me feel like I need to worry about academics!! I feel like I'm just doomed to be doing the wrong thing

I think you have misread the story. The idea that children who aren't in school are falling behind their peers by age 3 is not what that story says.
The point is that children growing up in poverty are at a disadvantage relative to their wealthier peers and they're at even more of a disadvantage if the TV is one of their chief babysitters and they don't go to preschool.

I don't think "formal preschool" has to mean academics in the sense of reading and writing and numbers. Many preschools are play based and just developmentally appropriate as opposed to family caregivers who are also doing other things and not necessarily planning infant/toddler activities, and who are more likely to put a baby/toddler in front of the tv. I'll still be looking for play based programs for my younger two for sure.

@2littlepumpkins: @honeybear: the rest of time time my 3yo is with grandma along with 2 younger kids so the tv isn't on all the time but they're definitely just playing/hanging out and not doing anything super enriching
@honeybear: and I did read it to be like part of it is probably environmental/money v not being in school but still the parts about other countries having public prek and the us lagging behind academically makes me worried/sad

@gotkimchi: if your lo is interacting with other kids or playing with toys most of the time I wouldn't worry!i read that lower socioeconomic status is also associated with talking less to infants and young children which has a huge effect on development.
